Meet Jason MacMillan, Ethan Ganouna, Naveed Farhadi & Jack Kimber of North Morlan in Orange

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason MacMillan, Ethan Ganouna, Naveed Farhadi and Jack Kimber.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We all met during the first semester of college, hanging out and playing music together in the same dorm. In January of 2018, we realized we had something special and decided to pursue it more seriously. Our first gig was March 1st for a Jewish holiday party at our University’s Chabad. Since then, we have been playing as many shows as possible, and sharing our music with as many people as we can.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of our biggest struggles is balancing our lives as full-time students and working musicians. Finding time to rehearse amongst classes, mid-terms, and finals is a constant battle, as we aim to play shows every weekend. Recently, the majority of our shows have been house parties, and due to the noise ordinance in Orange, it is difficult to play without the cops showing up. Other than these two things, we have been fortunate enough to not run into any other issues.

Please tell us about North Morlan.
North Morlan is a four-piece alternative rock band. What sets us apart from others is that each of us come from extremely different musical backgrounds and we all listen to very different types of music. Bassist Naveed Farhadi is originally a classically trained violinist. Rhythm guitarist and Singer Jason MacMillan has been writing and listening to alt. rock, pop, and folk music for years. Lead Guitarist Jack Kimber has been studying guitar/writing music since he was young and is an avid “jam band” enthusiast, Drummer Ethan Ganouna is an avid playlist curator specializing in RnB, Jazz, and House music.

When we play music together, we end up with something exciting and new. Improvising and finding new pockets within our songs is our specialty and gives us a lot of freedom to feed off the energy from the crowd, shaping our sets around them.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We have learned that practicing and putting in as much time as we can into our music is the most important thing we can do.
