Today we’d like to introduce you to Soulex.
Soulex, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I wanted to be a singer for as long as I can remember, but I ended up having a really detrimental “relationship” experience when I was in high school. From ages 14-18 I was in love with an older boy that my family didn’t approve of and it caused a lot of pain and anxiety for everyone in my life that I cared about. Fast forward to 18 when it finally ended, I knew I didn’t want to go to college, I wanted to make music. My dad got me a keyboard and I started teaching myself piano, I channeled all of that teenage angst into what was so healing and therapeutic for me. That really sparked my love for songwriting. So I started recording some of these songs I was writing in my friend’s basement and it got the attention of a famous hip hop producer named Mike Will Made It. Working with him was really the start of how I learned the industry and started making connections and building my catalogue/ developing my sound. I just released my debut album “Love Lessons” and I’m planning on releasing two more albums soon!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been such an exciting journey. The music industry is so complex and I haven’t always had the amazing team that I do now. That was the hardest part, I believed in myself SO much and it took a few years to meet the right people who seriously believed in me and helped create structure around my art. There was a year in my life where I was working with people who had a vision for me that wasn’t aligned with mine and it almost made me want to quit music. I was depressed going to the studio, I felt creatively drained. But that’s when I decided to expand my network and go out and get who and what I was looking for! And I did it!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a singer/songwriter/ musician. I’m known for my sultry, dark pop sound. All of my music is written from real life experiences, so I like to call it “coping music” relatable stories of love and loss. I’m the most proud of my debut album “Love Lessons” it’s seven songs in 17 minutes and really touches on so many feelings; sad, happy, strong, weak. It’s really vulnerable and embodies the human in me; all of the imperfections that make me, me.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans include writing a TON of new music, traveling, working with artists and producers that I’ve dreamed of collaborating with, playing a lot of shows, and making a lot of new fans!
