Today we’d like to introduce you to Eder Lopez.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I went to a Pig Vigil with LA Pig Save back in November 30th, 2017. After the third time attending I asked the organizers why they were only having the Vigils every two weeks instead of every week. They told me because they didn’t know enough people. I told them I did and so they asked me if I wanted to help organize and I said yes. Several weeks after we started the new Animal Alliance Network and within a 6-7 months, we went from having maybe around ten people to a couple of nights having over 200 people. We’ve had some incredible activists from all over attend our weekly Wednesday Pig Vigils from Anita Krankj the founder of the Save Movement from Toronto to Earthling Ed of the UK to James Aspey from Australia to artist Moby. Through word of mouth, using social media and being extremely consistent with weekly Vigils we’ve helped grow a community of compassionate activists. We are lucky to have such dedicated people who devote their time, love & energy to spread awareness of the true horrors of the animal agriculture industry.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. In the beginning we didn’t have equipment like lights and had very little water sprayers. Giving water to six months old baby Pigs was more difficult and we weren’t able to get great footage in the dark. Starting from scratch meant we didn’t have a following so we had around only 20 people for awhile attending our Vigils.
Please tell us about Animal Alliance Network.
Animal Alliance Network primarily organizes Pig Vigils every Wednesday night. We stop slaughterhouse trucks full of six months old baby Pigs and give water & love to them before they enter the slaughterhouse. We are one of over 700 chapters around the world that does this, we are part of the Save Movement. We also align ourselves with any organization that wants to help our nonhuman Animal friends like Anonymous for the Voiceless, Direct Action Everywhere & PETA. We are proud of the amazing community we have helped build in Los Angeles. People who dedicate their lives to helping our world a better place for all beings. What sets us apart is the close relationship we have with our attendees. We go out to eat and do normal things outside of activism that creates closer and stronger relationships.
Animal Alliance Network is proud of. On Tuesday March 5th, 2019 Animal Alliance Network was on the front page of the Los Angeles Times we’ve also been in the Chicago Tribune along with being on NBC News, Spanish news agency EFE News & Metro UK. We currently have a billboard up in West LA on the corner of Beverly Blvd & Formosa where thousands of people pass by every day. The billboard has a picture of Bev the Pig from a Vigil we had on April 17, 2019 and it reads “I’m Not Food”
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t have a favorite memory. Honestly just being alive. I’ve been really lucky with some close encounters with death. Life is absolutely beautiful & I’m lucky to be here.
