Meet TORTEE

Today we’d like to introduce you to TORTEE.

TORTEE, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Monrovia, Liberia. At the age of 12, I moved to Charlotte, NC to live with my mom. Being uprooted from everything I knew at such a young age took some time to adapt to. Growing up, I knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry. In other to pursue my dreams, I went to North Carolina Central University and studied textile and apparel design. I started focusing on designing African apparel, I created AfroFusion which is still in its early stage. I did my first fashion show as a designer in African fashion Week Charlotte. While in college, I made the decision to move to LA to further my career. I moved to LA in April, and things have not been the easiest. Aside from designing, I’ve always had a passion for modeling as well. Since moving to LA, I’ve done the model experience LA by Rio Summers, and have been working with photographers to create original content.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s definitely have not been a smooth road. With everything in life, nothing good comes easy. Moving to LA alone has had it’s ups and downs. Getting told no countless of times at every audition has been a tough pill to swallow. I’m not tall enough, not dark enough, or too dark etc. I’ve always believed that God put a passion in my heart for a reason, and I have faith that eventually my time will come.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My cheerleaders have always been my family and friends. They have always pushed me to be my better self, and strive for something greater. Encouraging words goes a long way, and I will always be grateful for it.
