Today we’d like to introduce you to Aareone McCoy.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Raised in Bloomington, Indiana the youngest of two siblings, raised in a very Caucasian town where there was a lot of prejudice population 30 minutes away is where the KKK was founded Martinsville, Indiana.
Growing up as an African American in my town you had to really do the extra to stand out and be treated as if you were a part of the population when it comes to school sports and extra circular activities. I was raised in a strict hone with two great parents, my dad as the pastor of a big church and my mom a teacher in the community for 20 plus years both doing they career for 20 plus years.
As for me my life growing up was church, school, and sports. All through grade school my activities were all about sports having played in elementary, middle school, and high school, it was a little challenging because like was stated really had to prove your self even more being African American and put it the extra effort and work to earn your playing time and spot. So I did that throughout all my years in all levels of school, my main sports were track, football and basketball. Junior year and Senior year I decided to put my time in and chose one sport and I chose basketball, from trying to be recruited my main targets were historical black colleges. The only thing holding me back was my SAT scores a lot of coaches wanted me but my SAT scores were not high enough to get in the school, so one school decided to take a chance and that’s Clark Atlanta University great division two historical black private school.
So the coach gave me a chance and than again still had to earn and prove myself but that was nothing I wasn’t use to and i did and got on the team and played, being on the team wasn’t all flowers and chocolates there was a lot of favoritism and not playing the best player for the job, so therefore our record was horrible for three years, so therefore the coach that gave me a chance got fired and so I left and got an opportunity to be the starting point guard and average the most points for Robert Morris College I’m Illinois, so I played there for a year was nothing I wasn’t use to very Caucasian town, but as a man you have got be real with yourself and realize if I stay in this small town is there any other opportunities I could have, so I did a lot of thinking and decided to go back to Atlanta, Georgia and enroll back into Clark Atlanta University.
That next year was one of the worst years of my life with almost dying in two major car accidents the first time wasn’t as major as the second time, but the second time totaled my car and put me in the hospital doctors wondering how I was still alive after seeing the car for themselves. How I was raised it was nothing but Jesus Christ’s himself that I’m about to tell my story today, but after that major horrible year things started to get better, focusing on just school and than started to get in the Professional Modeling world. As I started that career collaborating with so many photographers around the world finding my look and having different looks and building my portfolio up really treated it like a sport still an like a sport and be the best at it, staying in shape practicing my different faces doing my research and have been really successful in the modeling world photographers wanting to shoot me and being on live television and reality shows VH1, MTV, and BET.
And as current right now still getting my name out there and taking my craft every serious being a professional Model and at the same time in school. I was raised very religious so as a man you think about your life a lot how you can do better change for the better and just be a better man period, so I thought to myself I have to use every gift God has giving me so growing up in Church my father had me and my two older siblings being active in the church my thing was playing the drums and singing, so I had to realize I have to use my other gifts so now currently to I am an R&B and hip hop artist in a group with only me and my blood brother called “After 9”, as of today there are really no male groups out there so my brother and I decided to take that gift very serious have already recorded our first single “belong”, and soon to be on all platforms, so as man and a person in general you have to use all your gifts and by realizing that this is where I am today professional Model, and Artist and can thank nothing but God himself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it was very rough smooth road but like they say the greatest people have a testimony and their journey as not a straight line and mine was definitely not a straight line. Having to be raised in a very Caucasian town where there was a lot of prejudice population 30 minutes away is where the KKK was founded Martinsville, Indiana, dealing with racism and being called the N word and out of your name and your having to fight sometimes to show them your not soft. Growing up as an African American in my town you had to really do the extra to stand out and be treated as if you were a part of the population when it comes to school sports and extra circular activities, but that made me a stronger man today as I am! But after the growing up life and started to get more mature and lols change etc. You then have to deal with people thinking your full of yourself being a handsome guy well attractive guy but as soon as someone get to know you their impression of you changes and they treat you way different so I also had to deal with that later years after high school. So the road was not easy at all.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
