Today we’d like to introduce you to Felisha Carrasco.
Felisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started photography just as a hobby. I liked the way the gear looked and so I started picking up cameras and was just messing around. I was mainly shooting lifestyle shoots for friends and family. I didn’t really have thoughts to turn my photography hobby into a career at the time. I wanted to work in the sports industry so I was applying to sports teams as a game night staff so I could get my foot in the door somewhere.
Eventually my passion for photography turned into getting into social media when I started working for the LA Clippers NBA Team. I did social media for three seasons, assisting the official social accounts, and managing their G League Affiliate Team as the team photographer.
I had the privilege of taking photos of their halftime shows and one night, Problem. The rapper, was performing and was able to speak with him in person and got connected with his manager. Problem was a huge part in why I am at where I am. I got so many opportunities doing studio sessions with him, meeting other artist through him, and doing concerts. My connections just kept growing and growing.
Aside from that, I hit up what seems liked hundreds of media outlets in the LA area asking if they needed a photographer since in order to be assigned media passes to concerts you had to be on assignment. I got a lot of no’s but eventually got two yes’s from media outlets called BallerStatus and DJ Booth. I also met a lot of DJ’s from events and concerts, which are now a consistent source of income for me.
Fast forward with all these connections and networking through media outlets, DJ’s, and the events, I was shooting Nipsey Hussle, Coachella, ComplexCon, Roy Woods, MVMT Watches, True Religion, Rich the Kid, Tyga, and so much more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I’ve been depressed, doubted, and have had many dry patches with no work. My main goal for me is to shoot Drake, which still hasn’t happened for me, so I have moments where I get really sad. I get turned down from an opportunity to shoot where he will be at, and I just get super depressed thinking it will never happened. But I have to remind myself that humbleness, patience and hard work will get me there one day.
Also, as a creative, you have to be able to market yourself well if you want constant clients which mean income. I’ve struggled with that. I have gotten better with selling myself and what I can do but there is always room for improvement.
Lastly, making money being a full-time freelancer is hard. I’ve struggled financially and feel like I have to bend over backwards just to prove my prices are worth my value. But connections and marketing are key to getting not just getting clients but consistent clients. My most consistent clients are DJ’s.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Felisha’s Photography – what should we know?
I photograph pretty much anything and everything. From portraits, lifestyle, sports, engagement, wedding, kids, events, parties, concerts, and products. I enjoy shooting sports and concerts the most.
I am most proud of my support that I have, my friends, family, mutual acquaintances and even strangers have supported me so much during my journey and it means the absolute most to me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my ability to have versatile in what I shoot I think is what allows me to be as successful as I am. I don’t just do one thing so I am able to connect and meet so many different people which in turn lead to other opportunities.
