Meet Allister Ann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allister.

Allister, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Photography was always my hobby in being able to document friends and loved ones around me. A diary entry of sorts, it was a trade that opened up experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. I started out with friends who were in a band that gave me the opportunity to travel and document their story, and that led to being hired to do the same for others.

Ten plus years later of touring and being in the studio with musicians, meeting new people and establishing great relationships has been incredible. I have been fortunate enough to combine two passions; music and photography and lucky enough to create a career out of it. I believe in the quote “do what you love and you will never work a day in your life”

Has it been a smooth road?
Similar to a musician when they have “made it” people don’t take into account the time and hard work it took to get there. As an artist it takes time to develop your craft and find confidence in yourself. Being a woman in a more or less predominate man’s world, it has been difficult at times to be taken seriously. There have been challenges to prove myself. I’ve always had the attitude of- just let my work speak for itself.

What were you like growing up?
My parents were both artists in their own right, always encouraging my two brothers and I to be creative, introducing us to a wide spectrum of art in all forms. An appreciation for antiques, old films, museum visits, cross country trips in our 1954 Plymouth Belvedere station wagon, always with a soundtrack of every kind of music imaginable. Halloween was our most celebrated holiday which only stimulated our imagination more. In school, art classes were always my favorite. At home, I was perfectly content drawing for hours in my room or sitting by the window on a rainy day reading. My father gave me his old film camera when I was around 15 and thats what started it all for me.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m a photographer. I love to shoot 35mm film over digital. I have directed several music videos and have recently added commercial branding to the list. Creating a memorable, impactful image has always been my goal, in any format.

Specializing in documentary work, I also shoot album covers and artwork for tours. My first photography book, To Whom It May Concern, was based upon life on the road with the band The Civil Wars. It was years of my work put into a storyline that I was very proud of. My second photography book just came out of my work with Kenny Chesney that I am very excited to share. I guess what I’m most proud and grateful for is that I have developed a loyal clientele, having established long term relationships and friendships.
