Today we’d like to introduce you to Celestina Chioma Anyaeche.
Celestina Chioma, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I never thought I was going to get into fashion designing. I am from Nigeria and completed my elementary, high school, and college education there. Although I majored in economics in college and graduated with honors, I was unable to secure a good employment due to the high rate of unemployment.
As a result, I considered ways to create an employment for myself. I decided to learn about fashion designing and interned with a fashion designer in Lagos, Nigeria. After a couple of months, I realized that I loved creating beautiful designs for women. Today, not only have I grown in my craft, I still have the zeal to learn more and perfect my craft.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road and I did not expect to have one. I have definitely had a lot of struggles along the way. Due to time constraints, I won’t be able to talk about most of them. I immigrated to the United States in 2016. As an immigrant, my initial struggle was cultural shock and crossing over some cultural barriers. It took a while for me to relate with my clients here because fashion and business are interpreted differently in both countries. Honestly, this is still a work in progress for me and I’m continually improving myself. Secondly, it is not an easy task to be a student and a business owner at the same time. I have some weeks when I have both school exams and fashion show to exhibit my craft; and need to manage my time efficiently to succeed in both endeavors. I must say, overcoming each obstacle gives me more confidence and assurance that every obstacle can be overcome.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Anit Cuts and Stitches – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Anit Cuts and Stitches is a fully-handmade women’s clothing brand. Anit Cuts, first founded in Nigeria in 2016 and later moved to the United States, uses African fabrics to make clothes that transverse cultures. The name, Anit Cuts and Stitches, stems from “cutting” different pieces of fabrics and “stitching” them together to make elegant outfits. Currently, what we are most proud of as a company is having Tamar Braxton in one of our designs. One of the things that set us apart from others is how much we hold each client’s satisfaction.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m definitely looking forward to what the future holds for my brand. My goal is to grow a brand that is internationally recognized. Another goal of mine is to give back to my home country, Nigeria.
