Meet Ari Gumora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ari Gumora.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ari. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started when I was about 5 or 6 years old, way before Spotify or Youtube when we actually had a radio in the house. I remember flipping through the channels trying to avoid commercials and jam out to my favorite tunes. It was around Christmas time when I first heard breakaway by Kelly Clarkson. I had a very distinct emotional response to the song that I had experienced listening to other music before, but for some reason this was the first time I really thought about it. I really remember thinking to myself, I’m like six years old and I haven’t gone through shit in life yet, so why do I relate to this song so much? I knew I didn’t have a lot of life experience to reference, but that seemed to have nothing to do with how strongly the music would impact me. I thought to myself, yo music is freakin’ cool/weird. What is it about a certain combinations of sounds/timbres that can make someone feel so strongly for literally no reason at all. That fascination carried on within me throughout my journey doing the music thang.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Pretty smooth. I mean I’m very very very very very very far from where I want to be, so we’ll see how bumpy it gets along the way. I ain’t afraid of the turbulence though, it builds character.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I’m out here doing the music thing. I guess you can say I’m a rapper? or singer? I write for, produce, and record myself. I honed in on a lot of different skills so I can be completely self-sufficient. I don’t need anyone to produce or engineer me because I’ve mastered the art on my own. I’m a well-rounded musician, trained in classical and dabbled in some jazz, but I write Hip-Hop, Rnb, and Pop. I think everyone should understand at least basic level theory of any skill they want to learn, but if they’re badass at winging it more power to them. I also write and produce for other artists besides myself.

What were you like growing up?
I was a little ball of energy, jumping around from person to person. I think I really felt shy as a kid, so I combatted my shyness by really learning how to open myself up and get others to do the same. I had a huge ego. There’s videos of me running around saying “I’m the best! I’m the best!” and then if you would tease me just a little I’d lose my shit. I was super emotional. My mom said that whenever she would take me to my best friends house to play, I would cry for hours when I got there because I was so happy/excited to see everyone, and then I would cry again when I had to leave. What a cutie.
