Meet Amy Johnston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Johnston.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up training in my father’s Martial Arts school and would constantly watch Hong Kong Action cinema and any action films we could get our hands on. My brother and I would act out the fight scenes and create our own to perform. When I got to the age where I needed to start figuring out what I wanted to do for a career, I couldn’t think of anything better to do with the skills I had practiced for so many years. I had watched Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and was so inspired with the strong yet graceful Michelle Yeoh. I knew there needed to be more badass and inspiring women on the big screen like her.

So I set out to be one of those women. This was the route that I needed to pursue. Through years of constant struggle, perseverance, determination, hard work, and lots ramen noodle packets….I can say that it was all worth it and I believe I have the best job in the world. I have stunt doubled some of Hollywood’s biggest A list celebrities and I have starred in my very own action films with some incredible teams! I am now creating businesses and getting into all sorts of fitness ventures while expanding my knowledge like never before!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, I can say being a broke young naive girl in a big city of not knowing anyone can have many challenges but I’m so grateful for those. The biggest obstacles for me in the entertainment world have been the fact that you need to market yourself. I was always told growing up that actions speak louder than words and to always be humble. Being humble in this business is rough because you need to be able to be your own commercial. You have to make people want to buy what you are selling, which means you need to learn how to market to sell. I have learned through the years to be confident not just inwards but also outwards. This in itself is good marketing. If you believe in you, it’s much easier for other people to do the same.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work as an actress and stuntwoman in film, tv and video games. I am most proud of following my own path and not allowing the judgment of others to stop me from moving forward. Getting into this industry everyone told me I couldn’t do stunts and acting at the same time and that I won’t work this way. Turns out, it’s difficult but absolutely possible. It’s very rewarding to realize that there is not only one way of doing things, everyone has their own path. Learn from others but choose for yourself.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Some of my favorite memories from my childhood are playing outside with my brother Jesse. We lived out in the country and thank goodness because we were wild children. Running around naked, jumping off and onto everything. We jumped off our trailer home with sheets and umbrellas because we thought for sure we could fly! Lol….we flew but Wyoming wind is strong and flew us straight back into the wall of the trailer home. We would run around outside all day, doing nothing but everything. Something I really cherish that I have been thinking about a lot lately is how much fun we had as a family with really not much money ever. We just had fun always.

Amy is the real deal. She and her brother and especially her dad, Dave (rip) are greatly remembered and respected by the New Mexico and other Kenpo communities. Love her films also. Good luck Amy! R. Lar Thomas, Chuan Fa America led by GM John Patrick Nieto, Albuquerque, NM.
