Today we’d like to introduce you to Isue Shin.
Isue, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to the New York State Summer School of the Arts the summer before my senior year of high school. Going out and shooting on a Bolex and cutting and piecing together the film by hand was the first time I felt like I had found something I never wanted to stop doing.
During college, I did a handful of unpaid internships and moved to LA after graduating. Now I balance between directing and shooting my own work and assisting on other sets.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think LA can be a daunting city as someone moving here straight out of college. It can also be intimidating when it feels like everyone is chasing the same goals. I think the biggest challenge has been trying to locate what exactly I’m working towards.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I like to make work relating to memory. Sometimes I feel like the reason why I love film so much is because it’s a perfectly preserved moment. I hope I continue to have the opportunity to make work that rings true and that uplifts women, especially women of color.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success in a creative field is really nebulous, but for me, I think it’s to make work that I’m not embarrassed of. I just hope that I get to continue to do work that is creatively stimulating, and foster a healthy life outside of work by becoming a better friend and daughter.
