Today we’d like to introduce you to Toofun Golchin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Toofun. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As an Iranian American I’ve always been it’s been a lifelong pursuit of mine to combine the two cultures musically. I love the sound of a Stratocaster through an over-driven amplifier playing delicate ornaments and scales from the east. I feel very fortunate to have been able to pursue my interest in the CalArts guitar program and the UCLA Film Scoring program. I worked with some fantastic composers such as Dan Romer and Mohsen Namjoo.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The worst day was when I was working with my friend on a TV show and because of the deadline I had to pull an all-nighter and go straight to work the morning; then still with no sleep pull another all-nighter and go to work again the next day. Two days of no sleep. That was the worst. In the field, I find my self constantly juggling different work schedules and deadlines. It can be frustrating but I’m sure there are a lot of stories like that here in LA, it’s very competitive and you have to deliver.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My band Zaub has just finished our fifth record and we mix rock and middle-eastern music. The band is made up of two electric guitars, tenor saxophone, drums, bass, and percussion; however we have also had Harp, String quintet, marimba clarinet on our recordings too. Our newest record features more brass instruments like barry sax, trombone also flute and slide guitar. The goal of the music is to combine the sounds of the middle east and use western instrumentation and influences together.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Hasn’t happened yet.
