Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Parker.
Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Starting off playing music when I was young, I have always been involved in the arts. I made sure to find things I was passionate about and tried to incorporate this into making a living. I was asked to shoot musicians I was playing with and slowly built a portfolio. When I moved to Los Angeles, I got involved in shooting for clothing lines and artists right away. Doing whatever I could to product work I was proud of while also making sure I was reaching out to others I was inspired by. I started working under Alex Prager and got a sense of other types of photography through her and other artist I worked with while also taking classes at Long Beach State where they had a fantastic dark room.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Freelance is always challenging but I’ve always tried to take notes from those around me and those who have been doing it for life. The best advice I ever got was, “you’re only as good as your last job”. I strive to take note of what I’m doing and reach out those I want to shoot for and challenge myself to do better. There’s finical struggles that can be solved by keeping yourself in check and not being too gear focused, renting for the jobs that have the budget, and always being upfront with your clients by meeting expectations. If a client has a limited budget find a way to create the best work while not staying within your means. Other struggles consist of getting back to those emails right away, making yourself available when you can, and actually calling the clients you’re working with or want to work with to get a feel for the type of work you’re about to take on.
Tyler William Parker Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in photography for clients such as hotel groups, clothing lines, and product. I’m mainly known for the lighting and look I give to my work. A lot of people out there take photos these days, but if you know how to take it to the next level and be creative with lighting and the tools you have available to you while composing an interesting shot, then you can really create beautiful work. I believe my work speaks for itself through these forms of practice.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There have many many moments where I have found that my career has brought me happiness. I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made throughout the years and the friendships through the work I have cultivated. It has led me down a path to shoot with some of my favorite musicians I grew up idolizing and designers I’ve envied. Working under Richard Meier’s Daughter, Ana Meier I photographed a collection that brought me to fantastic locations with even more interesting people. We were able to create a book of imagery that I still get comments on today and this was over six years ago. I’m sure there are other moments that have stood out as well but it was a start of something good.
