Today we’d like to introduce you to Slim Reaper.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Okay, so this question was stumping me because what is a story? A story has a beginning, a middle and an end, right? What is my story? I can’t pinpoint any of those in my life. It always feels like I am at the beginning, but looking at my past experiences, I must be in the middle right? Or am I at the end without knowing it? Is the beginning of my story when I got my first video mixer a few years ago? Or is it in middle school when I pointed a camcorder at a tv to create a feedback loop? Maybe I am just a feedback loop. The more I think about it, the more I feel that my story, in a sense, is a gradually intensifying inquiry into the construct of narrativity and traditional plotting realized through visual stimulus.
Please tell us about your art.
Moving image manipulation. Glitchy stuff. Anything with an RCA cable! Lots of video mixers, cameras, and circuit bent multichannel workflows. Making things look weird.
Which translates to things like Projections for concerts such as Desert Daze. Music videos for bands like Feels and King Gizzard. The coolest VHS production over at Molten House Media. And a talented team (Curtis, Alex, Max, Elias, Mike) that works with me for larger installations. It feels very broad writing it down.
We have been collecting televisions to organize into stacks and walls. My last count was 65 cathode ray tube sets. Majority of these TVs are found on the street or on their way to the trash. My inner hoarder forces me to pick these up. My crew guys (Curtis, Coach, Max, Elias, Mike) are the best and for some reason help me lug these things around and run them.
I don’t know what you should take away from what we do, though. I don’t know why I do this. It’s a compulsion. I see a TV on the curb, and I think “that would look good in a pile with 30 other TVs”. I do really enjoy it. Right now, the goal is 100 TV sets.
Just know that these things are heavy.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national, or international events and issues affect your art?
Artists are the true witnesses of history.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
@slimreaperlightshow and @moltenhousemedia if you want to see.
Support wise – I do always appreciate TV donations or if you buy a VHS zine!!
