Meet Elin Sandberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elin Sandberg.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Elin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out as a 13-year-old girl from Sweden with three older brothers who were all playing different instruments and wanting me to start playing the bass so we could have a band together. I ended up loving the bass and I did end up having a band with two of my brothers for a period of time while I was still living in Sweden. While in high school, there were some faculty members from Berklee College of Music in Boston who came to my school in Stockholm to hold audition for people who wanted to study at Berklee. I decided to not audition for the school since I still had a full year left in high school but the faculty members saw me play at a concert and later offered me a presidential scholarship for their 5-week summer program in Boston. I ended up going and there I auditioned for full-time studies and I had the honour of getting a full tuition scholarship, so in 2012 I moved to the US to start my studies. I graduated from Berklee in 2015 and that’s when I moved to LA to pursue my dreams to be a professional bass player. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working with many wildly respected artists, producers, and musicians.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Obviously living on the other side of the world from your entire family is a huge struggle and is not easy. But also getting used to life as a musician, getting used to being rejected and denied opportunities for many different reasons, learning that it is not always in your control and just the normal struggle to find ways to make it, in the beginning, is not easy. Takes a lot of hard work.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a bass player. I travel the world and play with a lot of different artists. I am currently the bass player for Chloe X Halle, as well as for Oscar and Grammy-winning film composer and artist A.R. Rahman, to name a few. I am also a studio musician and have recorded for artists like 6lack, as well as for Terri Lyne Carrington on a track featuring the late great Natalie Cole among others.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe that what some people would call luck is a combination of preparedness and opportunity. The only thing you can do is work as hard as you can so you can be as prepared as possible to do the best job you can when the opportunity appears, and that is what I try to do.
