Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Willis.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I grew up in Inglewood. My household was full of music. My mom collected vinyls and would show me her favorite music and I remember falling in love with it all at first listen. Of course, I was hella young so I couldn’t really process it all but nonetheless, it made me feel something. Fast forward to about age 13. I started writing to random Lil Wayne beats on youtube.
They all sucked but I knew I was on to something haha. It was a little hard to focus though considering my family members would always have some type of issues going on. Whether it was arguments about rent, gang affiliation, physical fighting, the list goes on. My household wasn’t exactly the best place for a kid to be. So by the time I was 15, my mom moved her and I back to her mother’s house in Pittsburgh. When her mother passed away, we kept the house and she raised me there. I graduated high school and started college which is where I met my producers, “One800.” We worked on my first project titled “Go!’ and received a good amount of traction from it; speaking at schools, multiple shows in multiple states, scoring a Vice article about me as an artist, and all around just trying to make this work. I’ll be moving back to La in August to pursue this even further.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not exactly smooth but I’m making it all work. Saving up as much money as I can while balancing work, family time, and my relationship while still making music weekly. I’ve been very drained but at the same time, I’ve never been this happy in my entire life. It feels like all of this is going to be worth it and that’s all that matters.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Well, my “business” is my job as a musician. My Favorite Color is the part of my journals that came to life and decided to tell all my thoughts, hoping people would listen. I write this music, record, and perform it. Loving it more and more every step of the way. I’m really proud of how much I’ve progressed musically, as a writer, and most of all, as a person. Only up from here.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve personally never believed in luck. I feel like luck was an excuse that people made about someone that was always optimistic and happened to actually receive blessings in return. I’ve been getting called lucky my entire life. I look at that word as a compliment honestly. I try my hardest to hope for the best in my life while working hard so I feel like they go hand in hand. Being “lucky” is cool and all, but being diligent feels even better.
