Meet Dustin Bancroft of Always Summer in Malibu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Bancroft.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Back in high school. A family friend wanted a mentor for her son to help him kick his drug addiction. Part of that rehabilitation included me teaching him how to surf.

Surfing saved this young man’s life and he is now 15 years sober.

That is where the idea of teaching surfing all began, quite in an organic fashion.

Then I started teaching for all the local surf shops in Malibu, quickly began my own business and now teaching surfing for Pierce College:

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggle has always been localism. Surfers don’t like to share waves but luckily the locals all know who we are and know that we teach proper surf etiquette.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Always Summer – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We have been teaching Surfing for over 15 years. What’s different about who we are is the approach. We strive on teaching good habits. Most instructors want to get you up right away because it makes them look like they’ve done their job. In doing so they likely have taught bad habits. There is a wrong way to stand up and right way to stand up. We understand the difference…

We also pride ourselves in using quality boards and wetsuits. We don’t use cheap Costco boards that most instructors use. In fact, they are too small to learn on for most adults. Our boards are composed of the highest quality ingredients for success and optimal performance. And we don’t use the baseline model suits. We always provide wetsuits at the mid level that keeps you warmer and has more flexibility and comfort than the norm.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are looking forward to next year’s upcoming events that will teach inner city gang members and drug addicts how to surf.

The power of the ocean and it’s rehabilitative qualities are unmatched by anything else I have ever experienced.
