Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Guy.
Kristin, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I actually started out as a creative director working in the entertainment industry creating ad campaigns, movie trailers and promotional advertising for a number of large movies and television shows. I spent many years at Walt Disney and Warner Brothers before taking the leap to become a self-employed food stylist and photographer.
What started as a hobby food blog back in 2009 slowly turned into freelance food styling work, editorial opportunities and now a full-time job creating photography, graphic design, and written articles for national magazines, brands, and small businesses.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
What I make depends on the day! As the owner of a small creative studio I fluctuate between being a photographer, stylist, and graphic designer – sometimes all in one day.
I cater primarily to the food/beverage and home/garden industries, so one day I might be prepping to make a complex dish, working on a DIY article for HGTV, at the flower market or prop studio sourcing items for a photoshoot or dropping by locations to take photos for a business’s press and social media needs.
I never knew there was an opportunity to be so creatively diverse from week to week, I feel incredibly blessed to do this for a living, and I hope that my visual storytelling brings people joy as well as educate them about unique makers and businesses.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Exposure and compensation…And the two actually go hand in hand. These days there is an over-saturation of content floating around which makes it difficult for new artists (and even established artists) to get the exposure they deserve. Because there is so much content out there – brands and businesses are starting to assume that your work can be traded for free exposure…or product. Where exposure and product are nice, not being paid should absolutely stop being so commonplace! Be proud of your work and ask for the compensation that you deserve! Just because one person agrees to do it for free doesn’t mean that your hard work should be viewed at the same value.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work floats around in several different places, as someone who works behind the scenes in many cases it appears on other businesses social media or editorial outlets. One day it might pop up on a national beverage campaign, the next as an editorial piece for a home decor magazine. I’m an active contributor to HGTV and DIY Network and also have a huge catalog of work that lives with Cost Plus World Market where I worked for many years as a creative content producer.
But you can always see what I’m working on (be it food styling, home projects, visiting local businesses or what’s growing in my garden) over on Instagram and my own personal website www.dinexdesign.com. Please come over and say hello – I love interacting with people and building community!
