Today we’d like to introduce you to Mattson Smith, Elliott Shaw, Case Anderson, Evan Johnson.
Mattson, Elliott, Case, and Evan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our sophomore year in college Elliott Shaw and I (Mattson Smith) had numerous late night, beer-fueled conversations about the state of fashion, surf and skate and outdoors industries. We enjoyed running through scenarios of how we would run things if we had a brand and how it would look.
Those conversations kept happening and eventually we started coming up with names and styles for different clothing and outdoor pieces. The thing we knew was that everyone attempts to start a clothing brand at some point or another, so we had to be different and stand out to a unique crowd. We are very passionate about Western style, and we had to figure out a way to connect that to the surf and outdoor industries.
We already had roots in the surf industry, so that was easy, and we both loved the challenge of connecting that and bridging the gap to the Western/Outdoor scene. When we decided to get the ball actually rolling, we were very excited to bring on our third partner, Case Anderson, who worked very hard and helped get our brand off of the ground and gain traction to a larger crowd.
A few years later, we were lucky enough to get in touch with our now Creative Director, Evan Johnson, who has helped tremendously with our style and output. He’s the man. For now, it’s just us four working away to make this brand reach as many as possible and help spread the sentiment of a hard-working, stylish and classic man. The West as it once was.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a relatively smooth road so far. We started by selling a line of 100 shirts total and maybe 25 hats and have grown from there. We are organically grown, no outside investors or money coming in, so it’s been crazy to watch and be a part of. There have been some hiccups! Stuff like business partners coming and going, keeping inventory and shipping out of our mom’s living room, but overall it’s part of what we’re doing and those type of things never bother us much.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a lifestyle brand. We bridge the gap between Western heritage and surf. There is definitely no other company like Seager. No other brand has a legitimate stake in the Western world while staying relevant in the surf industry and we pride ourselves in that…
It’s also interesting to note that we are living our brand’s lifestyle. We are constantly going on outdoor excursions, surfing, riding horses, motorcycles or having.a few beers around a campfire with friends.
Ever since the brand was created we focused on telling our story through photo and video because there seems to be no better way to capture the essence of Seager. Our team of highly skilled photographers/videographers help push Seager to exciting new limits on every trip.
What were you like growing up?
We grew up surfing everyday and always at the beach. Being in Southern CA, we all had access to the mountains and the desert. I personally grew up on a few acres and was always out exploring. Our grandparents and fathers got us into the Western lifestyle making us work with our hands. We’ve always had a thing for watching Spaghetti Westerns and surf films. It was a perfect storm of who we are today and what our brand, Seager, represents.
