Meet Derek Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Jordan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Derek. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started music just like many other kids do at a young age. I stumbled upon it by accident and stuck with it. I moved out to Los Angeles via Pittsburgh in 2007. Worked on a solo career and then founded the organic rock band Decoded in 2012. Decoded toured much of the West Coast and released three EPs, including the well-received “Topanga” EP, before disbanding in late 2015.

The single “Topanga” off of the EP received national radio play on over 120 college radio stations and reached #1 for four weeks at 88.7FM WPCD in Champaign, IL. Decoded eventually disbanded in 2015. Since then, I’ve been releasing my own songs. They’ve been featured on History Channel’s “American Pickers,” WWE, UFC, and Fox Sports programs. I recently worked on the Nun Habits Series, creating original compositions for the series.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve put it more sweat and encountered more failures than most of my counterparts. Music does come more naturally to some. I’ve had to put in the work.

I never really looked for lucky breaks though. I kind of pride myself in being a workhorse. Hopefully, it makes me better in the long-run.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a musician. I sing, write, perform, record, mix, master and release all of my own material. I think the thing I’m most proud of is never allowing myself to give up.

My greatest achievements were being selected by Tryxo to tour in Germany and being on the 2009 Grammy’s ballot for a couple of categories.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
CDs will further become obsolete. Musicians will continue to trend towards releasing singles rather than albums.

Cloud streaming like Spotify will continue to absorb the market. Guitar solos will continue to be a thing of the past. The thing about music is, no one has been able to successfully predict where it’s going beyond a couple of years out.
