Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Neumeister.
Jeff, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my career not knowing exactly what I wanted to do during my undergraduate years. After an initial focus on IT and accounting in college, I graduated and found myself getting hired at an international firm that specializes in forensic accounting. I had no idea what that really was as it was never covered in any of the college courses I had taken up to that point.
I quickly found that it was the investigative arm of accounting devoted to piecing together puzzles where the puzzle pieces are upside down, and there is no final image on a box to reference. I fell in love with the challenges it afforded as I enjoy doing things that are not easy and require getting outside one’s comfort zone.
After several years working in various public firms, I took the leap in opening up my own firm. I wanted to utilize my skill set, years of forensic experience, and several graduate degrees to help clients with all of their accounting- and business consulting-related needs.
In addition to providing a forensic perspective on their tax and bookkeeping projects, I wanted to bring an additional layer of transparency to the work performed for them and in how they are being billed. The cornerstone of my firm, Neumeister & Associates, is comprised of integrity, clarity, and excellence.
Has it been a smooth road?
From opening up my own firm to grow it where it is now, things have not been smooth. There have been many long days and weeks during my tenure in the industry. My personal record, thus far, for longest workday is 37 hours straight–no sleep, no breaks, and with meals being consumed at my desk.
I attribute my drive to my appreciation for taking on and overcoming challenges. In my scarce free time, I have participated in hundreds of distance events including dozens of marathons and half marathons. After some time, such events began to feel as within my personal comfort zone, so I stepped outside to take on some ultra distance events.
The most notable one was the 2017 Marathon Des Sables, which is a 150-mile staged race through the Sahara Desert. As if the heat and distance were not enough, the race also calls for self-sufficiency meaning the racers have to carry all their own gear and food throughout the event.
Most recently, I flew to Tanzania to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro that offered some spectacular and breathtaking views. It is these kinds of self-inflicted struggles that have helped me to understand just how capable people are as everyone has more potential than what they realize.
These kinds of physical adventures and challenges also make the unforeseen and career ones that much less-concerning since I know that they can be overcome as well.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Neumeister & Associates – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Neumeister & Associates, Inc. is a full-service accounting and consulting firm that offers professional services to a broad client base. Clients, both individuals, and businesses operate in industries such as insurance, manufacturing, real estate, retail, oil and gas, entertainment, pharmaceuticals, technology, construction, health care, distribution, and financial services. The company specializes in forensic accounting, which includes commercial damage calculations, fraud investigations, family law matters, business valuations, and litigation support.
As a full-service firm, we also provide traditional services such as tax preparation, bookkeeping, general accounting, and business management. Given our expertise in more complex forms of engagement, we are able to see and approach traditional services with a forensic perspective. This ability of perspective has helped us differentiate ourselves from others that solely provide tax and bookkeeping services as we often find errors and missed opportunities. We are also able to offer CFO services given our broad range of experience in other areas including M&A, tax planning, analytics.
I am most proud of having tremendous team members that have a great work ethic and really care about our clients. They have helped facilitate the growth of the firm as we get ready to open up our third office location later this year.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I relocated to Los Angeles just over a decade ago. It has, since, remained my permanent home marking a transition from the previous years of my life that were semi-nomadic as a dependent to a parent in the military.
There is much that I like about the city including access to the beach, eclectic mix of demographics, healthy dose of eatery choices, and, most of all, the place where I met my lovely wife, Luan… and, now, the place that our baby girl came into the world as of February 7th this year.
The only two things that I really do not care for in Los Angeles are the cost of living and traffic. Thankfully, the slew of benefits the city has to offer outweighs those drawbacks.
