Today we’d like to introduce you to Joy Kim.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I majored in fine arts with an emphasis on oil painting and have always loved (or obsessed with) makeup. When helping mom through breast cancer treatment, I have learned of areola reconstruction tattoo and naturally was fascinated. The idea of helping women feel restored after breast cancer or injury through medical tattoo appealed to me greatly. However, I mistakenly thought I had to be a tattoo artist to perform these procedures.
I grew up in South Korea where tattoo was illegal and a big social taboo, so naturally, my family and friends were dead against the idea of a tattoo parlor. Long story short, permanent makeup was the next best thing or ‘route’ in this case. Funny enough, I am now almost ready to offer body decorative tattoo after the long detour, which I ended up loving anyway. I provide all types of cosmetic tattooing services. I strive to help women to feel confident and express their individual beauty in the most safe and well-informed manner.
I also started teaching which I am passionate about. I teach my students for many months to ensure their success (Typical duration of other courses are days, not months.) It gives me such joy to see all my graduates (except for few doing continuing education) go on to working and building their own businesses. Starting a new career or own business can be a scary, daunting endeavor. I am honored to be part of their success story. I truly believe in and am committed to helping other women.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a business owner definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted. First of all, I didn’t even know how to use Instagram before I opened my own business. Every step and aspect of owning a business, I had to learn and persist. It has been an amazing journey to realize my own strength and ambition as a female business owner. I am still in discovery mode, constantly growing and looking towards the next step. My only regret is not having done it earlier in my life.
Brow Cafe – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I provide all types of cosmetic tattooing service from permanent makeup, microblading, scalp micropigmentation, medical tattoo and soon to add a decorative tattoo to the menu. I also do tattoo removal and correction for old pmu work.
I am proud of my continuing education to provide the most up to date techniques and information for my clients, so they can make informed decisions for themselves. I also take utmost care into hygiene to ensure client safety. I am also proud that I invest time into empowering other women to become successful business owners themselves. I believe in doing right by clients and students, and so far, that business ethics seems to be working.
When accepting students I interview them to make sure I only accept students whom I can honestly believe in and support to see them through. Once enrolled, I invest time and train them for many months to make sure they are ready and provide support as long as they need me. It’s such an honor to be a part of another woman’s new brave journey and to be of help.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Monetary success is an obvious one. But far more than that, I believe in empowering other women, building their confidence, dedication and growth in my artistry and having integrity/ ethics in my business practice.
I hope to continue to grow so that I can make a bigger impact.
