Today we’d like to introduce you to Rain Chandra.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rain. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
At the time when I was a little girl living in Hollywood, seeing an herbalist, drinking brews made of smelly herbs and taking part in holistic treatments was seen as quite foreign and unconventional. But my constitution was not strong, and I was quite sick as a child, so these were common occurrences for me during my childhood. I thought it was unfair that neither of my sisters had to meet with strange healers who laid their hands on their tummies while chanting indecipherable words or drink teas that had been brewing for so many hours that they turned thick and black, but now I realize that my experiences as someone who benefited from a healers touch became the driving force for my entire life.
Early on, I became interested in nutrition because I intuitively knew that what we put into our bodies was one of the most powerful acts we could do for our well being. I remember begging my parents to let me browse through a vitamin store that was on our drive home. And on one Sunday, they indulged me and so the whole family piled out of the car and walked into the store. This was during the early ’80s and there were no Whole Foods, Erewhon, Co-Op or Rainbow Acres. There were only stores like this one with a bunch of empty shelves, about 10 dusty vitamins, and a few cruelty-free lip balms. It felt like an abandoned shop. Quite disappointed, we all went back into the car without purchasing anything.
In fact, all it did was give my family more reason to think I was quite odd for wanting to go there. Nonetheless, I pursued my interest in health and learned about plant-based diets that were nourishing for the body and sustainable for the planet. I understood that all beings were connected and that our health reflected the planets health and vice versa. I eventually went on to graduate with honors from UCLA with a degree in Medical Anthropology. This solidified my understanding of healing and the important role it plays universally across all cultures. I traveled in the rainforest of Borneo and learned how medicinal plants within nature provides so many of the remedies and answers we need.
I continued onto my Masters but felt something was missing in my studies. I wanted to learn more, but I also wanted to create, to touch, to work with my hands. Some people think this was a new path, but for me, it’s still the same path. I started studying Skincare and became a Licensed Esthetician. This world opened me up to so much more. I just can’t stop learning and loving every aspect of this topic. Being an Esthetician allows me to study both worlds of science and natural healing. I love incorporating the latest technologies such as Low-Level Light Therapy, Ultrasound, Oxygen Therapies, etc., with the understanding of Ayurvedic herbs, Chinese herbs, Pranayam, the use of Crystals, Sound and Energy Healing.
Oh yeah, along this wild and exciting journey of mine, I also became a Reiki Master, studied Ayurveda in India, became a Pancha Karma Practitioner, completed a Raja Yoga Teacher Training, became a Reconnective Healer, completed Massage Therapy Training, and have completed numerous courses in advanced skincare, facial lymphatic drainage with Kansa wand, facial cupping and Advanced peels-and I am nowhere near ending. I consider myself a Holistic Esthetician because I treat my clients based on all aspects of their body, mind, and spirit. I truly believe that when we shine from within, we will shine, glow and emanate that radiance on the outside.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has been a lot of growth and development of character following a path that seemed “eclectic” to my traditional parents. To put it into context, one of my sisters is a lawyer, and the other is a doctor, so for me to choose meditation and yoga in the Himalayas did not sound like a good idea to my parents.
My dad passed a year ago, but before he did, both he and my mom really loved to say how proud they were of me and that they were surprised by how everything I studied or knew of years ago is now common practice. They loved all the alternative healing modalities I shared with them, and it always made them feel better. That really made me happy.
Please tell us about Rain For Wellness.
My business Rain for Wellness is a place of healing and positive energy. I help people to feel and look great! As a Holistic Esthetician, I really strive to give my clients a retreat from their busy lives, if even just for one hour. I treat their skin as well as their state of being so they leave looking and feeling blissed and elevated.
With all the personal sensitivities I’ve experienced in my life, I truly have a deeper compassion for whatever issue my clients may be facing. I want my clients to understand that when we are treating the face, we must also look to the whole body; the external factors and the internal factors-the physical body and the energy body. I educate them into appreciating any signs our bodies gives us so we can treat the imbalance.
Our skin, our bodies, are like a beautiful symphony orchestra, and it has intelligence and wants to be in harmony. If for any reason this goes out of tune, we have the means to gently place it back into balance. I’m proud of the safe space I have created where so much joy and magic takes place. Whether it’s doing a Reiki Energy Session, Microcurrent Toning, Microdermabrasion, treating acne, or cooling the face down with jade stones, I feel inspired and motivated each day to greet each person with a giant smile.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood is playing Sneezy, in a Snow White play while I was in the 1st grade at Vine Street School. All I did was sneeze throughout the play, but each time I did, the entire audience laughed a lot, I guess it made me happy that everyone was having such a good time.
It’s so odd though, looking back because I was really shy as a child, so I definitely stepped outside of my comfort zone, and in so doing, I brought a lot of joy to the audience that night. The play was a hit, and we got a standing ovation!
