Today we’d like to introduce you to David Ferrugio.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to Los Angeles, has never been, from New Jersey at 22 years old with an unpaid internship lined up and an interview from a Craigslist Ad. Very promising start. I wasn’t completely set on what I wanted to do occupationally. I just knew I wanted a change, a new setting and to learn. I’ve worn many, many different hats from bartending, selling products in grocery chains, working in a souvenir shop as a salesman, working with video production start-ups as well as for a reputable Interior Design firm.
I’ve always been intrigued and encouraged by my peers to jump into Real Estate. It wasn’t until I worked for my cousin in design that I found myself in the mix of the biggest developers, agents, and players in the city that I decided to take the leap. It was being in that circle and the drive to want to work for myself that lead me to take the leap. I didn’t have much money lined up to make the leap into a commission based career; just the right mix of events took place and then finally my decision to start my Real Estate career amongst a couple of other side projects.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In my opinion, life is never a smooth road, and I wouldn’t want it to be. There were plenty of struggles, and I know there will be more struggles, but regardless of the obstacles, there’s always a lesson to be had which makes a “struggle” so necessary for growth. Also, without struggle life would be boring.
The struggles during my Los Angeles chapter of life I’m sure are pretty common. Uncertainty, lack of money and knowledge. Specifically, launching my life into Real Estate, all three of those were common. It was the first time I dropped the ‘paycheck life.’ And, that was scary yet exciting.
The initial struggle was how to get business without spending money. So, I received advice on how to do so, and I hit the pavement. I had to create something out of nothing being that my network was on the East Coast. Therefore I had to develop my network from scratch in a network-based industry.
Whether that meant going door to door meeting strangers and asking them to sell arguably their biggest investment on a whim or calling strangers asking them to trust someone who has never sold a house; it was a struggle of confidence that I had to pretend I had until eventually it was developed.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My main squeeze is a Real Estate Agent with Rodeo Realty. I’ve been known to specialize in selling luxury homes all throughout Los Angeles. I’ve sold a home north of $10,000,000, pieces of land down to $150,000 and everywhere in between so there isn’t much I haven’t seen. A lot of my deals have been new construction representing developers yet have also worked with plenty of first time home buyers and sellers.
I have an adaptable personality and wide understanding of the market to cater towards whatever the client needs are. I wouldn’t use the word proud to describe how I feel. It’s more grateful. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given by my clients who trusted me to deliver for them. It still is a very cool feeling when someone hires me. It’s a pretty big financial decision when you hire someone to represent you in such a major transaction. Therefore I’m thankful for every opportunity I’ve been able to manifest.
Apparently, I’m known as the silly guy who gets the job done. What sets me apart may be my straightforwardness in a town full of fluff, respectfully speaking. I like to enjoy life, have fun, not taking it too seriously but know when to. I come from the east coast which means you get what you see. I like to think I’m the same around everyone and no matter how far up or down this fugazi hierarchal totem pole society places you I will give everyone the same respect.
More specifically as to what sets me apart lately might just be my video content. I blend the art of storytelling and real estate in a comedic fashion. I’ve developed several comedic skits on my Instagram page (@davidjferrugio) that mixes it up in the luxury marketing videos where everyone throws in a $200,000 car. In the film capital of the world, we should be leveraging that, and I believe I’m blending that keeping a relaxed and fun approach to what can be a very stressful transaction.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
There’s a long list of people that I credit to many aspects of my life professionally and personally. My mother, my sisters, nephews/niece, and my family, are my rock and set me up for success and continually help me maintain any sense of comfort in this crazy world. My three girls and my family are everything to me so at the end of the day they are my “why.” Everyone needs a why… why we do things and why we strive. And, they’re it.
I was blessed to be taken under the wing when I first started to one of the biggest agents in town/country in Ben Bacal. I’ve been able to shadow him for a while and learn an incredible amount from someone who is unbelievably successful having sold well over $2billion in Real Estate. He was the one who told me to door knock, and that is exactly how I started my business and continue to grow my business.
I have a lot of friends who tell me like it is and don’t sugar coat it. It is vital to have people like that in your corner to tell you when you’re messing up, and that show support no matter what. You need people around you who are critical when it comes from a place of love and support. I have that.
