Meet Trailblazer Huong Lien

Today we’d like to introduce you to Huong Lien.

Huong, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey as a female content creator and social media strategist led me to the creation of my own boutique digital marketing agency.

Velvet Media & Marketing was founded on the joint passions of my partner, Jimmy and I. We both were working on dynamic projects on different sides of the digital marketing space and decided to join forces to offer more comprehensive and symbiotic services to clients.

We are deeply dedicated to our respective crafts – me with the creativity and strategy involved in content creation and social media management, and Jimmy enamored by website development and online marketing.

Together, we’ve had the privilege of servicing many female clients who run incredible companies across different industries – each making a major difference in their respective fields. In my beginning days, I never dreamt that I would be part of a company that uses the emerging digital space to amplify the positive passions of females and business owners across the beautiful city of LA. And for that, I am so very grateful.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I once was told, “No one wants to spend their entire lives floating in still water.” I do believe that all journeys worth traveling will be filled with lessons and hardships to help you grow along the way.

Running Velvet has been a great example of that. Since launching the agency, our growth has been (gratefully) beyond expectations and each new inquiry we get sends us into a new industry of interest that we never imagined before. When a documentary maker reaches out to us for social media management, we’ve got to jump right on board and understand their needs with a snap of a finger.

Being a female part of a company that places results as a top priority for clients requires immense innovation and adaptability in an ever-changing digital world.

For other young women looking to carve their impact in the digital space, I’d advise to never be discouraged and place learning at the very top of their agenda. Knowledge is a form of currency that never depreciates and will garner massive potential for impact and respect for us women, especially male-dominated fields.

We’d love to hear more about Velvet Media & Marketing.
I specialize in social media management and content creation for local businesses and entertainment individuals. I love this line of work for all of the creativity it involves, and the impact it has on the businesses that I get to work with.

Two of the proudest moments in my career include launching our agency, and when I received acknowledgment by one of our long term clients that the social media work we had been rendering was directly responsible for the spike in new diners discovering their restaurant.

This kind of direct impact is 100% why I have such a deep passion for what I do. As a result, this shared passion for making a meaningful impact is what sets mine and my partner Jimmy’s agency Velvet Media & Marketing apart from others. We are results-driven and put our clients’ needs above all other priorities – and we expertly leverage the power of digital marketing to maximize their presence across all spectrums.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
Two women who have inspired me in my life are my mother and Nellie Bly.

My mother is a woman who has navigated unexpected shifts in her life with eloquence and adaptability. After the Vietnam War, she was transported to Hong Kong and eventually The United States, without knowing a single word of English. With all of her ambition and passion, she worked her way up to learn the managerial side of the very volatile nail business. We lived poorly and meagerly during those first years, with frugal funds that were unable to afford me even the simplest of school supplies.

Eventually, she started her own business and our lives changed drastically thereafter. I was able to attend my college of choice (UC Berkeley), and have dedicated much of my time helping other young Vietnamese teens accomplish the same.

My next role model, Nellie Bly, took the sky as the limit and sailed the world in a record-breaking 72 days in 1889 – breaking this world record as a courageous female. It has inspired me to never take “no” as an answer, even as a past male accountant told me that venturing into social media work was delusional.

I took that “delusional” chance and five years later, am part of a thriving agency that is able to make SUCH a meaningful impact with businesses across LA and beyond. We as women cannot give up, or back down. On the other side lies incredible explorations to be had – and we might even sail the entire world faster than any man ever has.
