Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gray.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I specialize in portraits and event photography. I absolutely love colours and capturing moments that may otherwise be forgotten. I have always loved taking photos, however, in college is when I truly considered myself a “photographer.”
I started getting asked by friends – or friends of friends – to do photoshoots – whether it was just for a “new facebook profile pic” or couple of photos, I loved it all! Eventually, I was asked by a close friend if I’d be interested in shooting her wedding in San Francisco! I was so excited and of course, said yes! It was an incredible day, the time flew by, and I had never taken photos for eight hours straight before.
It was exhausting and exhilarating following around two people on what was hopefully going to be the best day of their lives (thus far). It definitely was. Their love was so inspiring! I was nervous having never shot a wedding before, but it went great. That was just when I was about to graduate from my undergrad degree, and it ended up inspiring me to pursue photography, and eventually cinematography as well.
Through school, I had the pleasure of living in LA for two and a half years and totally fell in LOVE with the city! I am now living back in Canada working as a freelance photographer as well as teaching video and photography courses at a local technical institution, SAIT.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve been very fortunate to have parents that have been super supportive of my education/career path. I started out in psychology, then switched to music education, music technology, then ended up completing my degree in general music. After that, I pursued my MFA in cinematography in Burbank, California at the New York Film Academy.
I think I’ve always been so excited in life that I get distracted/tempted by all the different opportunities and option life has to offer. So in terms of my job, one of my largest challenges has been to focus on one thing at a time. Still working on that… haha!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with J GRAY PHOTOGRAPHY – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
J GRAY Photography is my photography company! As I mentioned before, I specialize in portraits and events. I really enjoy connecting with my clients and delivering photos that they will love and cherish! Whether they’re for business, commercial, or personal purposes, there’s nothing better than getting enthusiastic feedback on my work!
I think because I love what I’m doing, this makes the outcome of the photos that much greater. At events, I love documenting the chaos, the quiet moments, the things that maybe some people wouldn’t have seen at the event, I love it all! I’m hoping to expand into a film production company eventually, but one step at a time..!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Something I’m really looking forward to is hosting a workshop/styled shoot in the next year! I’m looking into holding one in treasure cay – in the Bahamas! So Stay tuned, if it pans out it will be incredible!
