Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Romero.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Omar . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my barbering roughly about 15 years ago and knew that one day I wanted to own a shop of my own. I’ve worked in a lot of well-respected barber shops and just took in as much as I could (good and bad) to learn how this business can be successful. I see many shops kinda die down or lose a lot of their barbers and clients and thought, that’s the first thing I have to tackle. I realized I wouldn’t be “Rich” with money with this biz, but that I can actually open a place where I can teach my friends the trade and they can learn to teach as well! and that to me is rich enough. Don’t get me wrong, of course, I want to be comfortable..
I think we are where we are at today due to consistent hard work, respect for everyone and patience.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been pretty smooth. Some of the struggles are in a new way, like stressing daily over things like Yelp and Google reviews etc… Of course, those things help, but the fact that somebody can go on there and just destroy your business for a simple misunderstanding or because the parking is frustrating is beyond me. But that’s about it. We try to just keep focus on our job and our own personal skill.
Vinny’s Barber Shop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in haircuts, shaves and anything related with men’s (sometimes ladies) grooming. We are known for a relaxed atmosphere and pretty good cuts haha. The thing I’m most proud of is the fact that we have licensed 6 friends through our apprenticeship program.
I believe that what sets us apart from other barber shops is that we don’t have a theme or call ourselves a traditional shop. We are just a barber shop with honest people supporting each other and teaching each other how to better our craft. From our porters to our apprentices up to our Master Barbers
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
too many to put on here. But as a general, it makes me proud that we can help people out when they come in feeling down in the dumps. Either giving them a free cut if their luck is down or having an eye opening conversation.
