Today we’d like to introduce you to Francesca Taylor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Francesca. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in the San Gabriel Valley. I attended West Covina High School (WCHS) and was a member of their award-winning dance/drill team where I got the opportunity to perform in a Super Bowl Half-time Show. I began teaching dance and coaching my senior year of high school and continued to do so while attending Mt. San Antonio College as a dance major.
During that time, I was also part of a professional hip hop dance company called Breed and trained in Los Angeles with many choreographers who pushed me to take my dance abilities to another level. Dance has offered me some interesting opportunities, like working at the happiest place on earth as a dancer in parades and shows. I love teaching and choreographing a dance, and I have no plans of stopping. Winning a costume contest with a friend is how I got started in cosplay.
A cosplay costume designer approached us after we won the contest and asked if we were cosplayers and where we bought our costumes. Although I had watched Heroes of Cosplay and thought it would be great to do that, I had never looked into it. A year later, I started cosplaying some of my favorite characters from some of my favorite fandoms.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A major challenge for me was being a clumsy little kid who badly wanted to dance. I was always walking into things and tripping over my own feet. To make it worse, I was the only kid in the family who couldn’t dance.
I would try to learn dances off of music videos even though I looked awkward doing the moves, I would always give it my all, but I always came up short. As I grew up, the dance steps finally started to make more sense, and I could recreate the dance steps from the video.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Although I’m a trained technical dancer, most people know me as a studio hip hop teacher, dancer, and choreographer.
Being an independent contractor has allowed me to redefine myself and expand into other areas of interest such as choreographing for a middle school show choir, princess parties, choreographing for weddings, quinceaneras, and flash mobs.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying positive is the most important thing you can do because there just may be something great waiting for you around the next corner.
