Meet Michael N Nguyen of Independent Hair Designer in Manhattan Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael N Nguyen.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was always creative growing up. Fashion, architecture, interior design, hair, and makeup have always caught my interest. I decided to pursue the beauty industry after being inspired by the high fashion runway.

I have been working in Manhattan Beach my entire career… I joined my very first salon when I was 19 years old. Ten years later, never thought I would be one of Southbay’s sought after colorist! I really enjoy enhancing anyone’s beauty with a natural approach to hair color. Hair color that is buildable and playful. Think of it as a long summer hanging out on the beach getting golden sun-kissed locks. I love the timeless color — classy, stunning hair where warm and cool tones harmonize.

I think most of the reason why I became successful is because I work really hard. Luckily for me, I naturally enjoy making people happy. So it was very easy for me to be available, ready to work hard, and always be myself! It is also important to find a career that you simply find joy and passion in. The rest will sort itself out once you’ve discovered why.

For me, there is nothing more gratifying than to enhance a person’s look with a haircut or some hair color and to witness the level of confidence change before and after each visit. I love it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely would be lying if I said it was always easy and smooth sailing. I learned patience, strength, and gained a lot of wisdom through the few salons I worked in throughout the years.

I think part of the struggles is learning to be extra patience, extra strong, and be open to change. Also, there will be people out there that wants to support you and watch you thrive and succeed, and then there are those who wants to control you and hurt you.

I learned to identify those people and surrounded myself with likeminded people and to create boundaries and protect myself from those who are negative and selfish. It’s a very competitive and fierce industry, and I just say, be the best you can for the ones that matter most, my guests.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Independent Hair Designer – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
So I have a P.H.D. Call me the hair doctor! I am a Professional Hair Dresser!!! I love using this line! HA!!! All jokes aside! I am a hairstylist! I enjoy doing color, but I can do a fantastic haircut or install extensions also. I love giving blowjobs also! Don’t be naughty, I’m talking about what the Dry Bar does, BlowOuts!

I’d like to think, most people love how I color their hair and how low maintenance it is. I’m pretty proud of how far I’ve come! I am living a happy life, enjoying travels, eating delicious foods, and have wonderful people in my life to share it with all because of hair!

I was raised by a single mother and being the youngest of four! I learned to work hard and be independent and to always strive for excellence! Now I can honestly say, “Mom, I want to alleviate all your stresses, and you can rest. Let us take care of you.” Unfortunately, she is now an angel.

What sets me apart from others? I listen. Listening to my guests wants and dislikes. Their tone of voice. How excited they sound when they ask for change. You give it to them! Or how unhappy they sound when you mention ashy, golden, red, etc. The key is to listen to your guest and give your professional advice and execute together.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am preparing for more change! I’m currently living in Downtown Los Angeles! I plan to move to Southbay this year, 2019. Super excited to become a local in this beautiful community of the beach. I’m hoping to also one day open my very own salon. We shall see!
