Today we’d like to introduce you to Saniyyah Mayo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been writing since a haiku poetry assignment in fifth grade, which exposed me to the power of writing as a means of healing and self-expression. Having my daughter at the age of 16 pushed me to be determined to defy the negative expectations of others and society’s stereotypes. Through it all, writing remained as a powerful ally and method of coping for me especially after I lost my 16-year-old brother at the age of 12. These experiences would also help me write my first book “Identifying and Breaking the Cycle.”
My interest in the social sciences led me to pursue a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice, in the hopes of working with at-risk youth. After having an active role in my church’s youth ministry, I realized the complexities of family life and the impact that repeated cycles of behavior could have on an individual’s psyche, even if they don’t realize it.
Recognizing the importance of the family unit as both a cause of as well as a potential solution for a range of recurring social and psychological problems, I expanded my expertise by beginning graduate study in Clinical Psychology (with a focus on marriage and family therapy. This further empowered me to make a difference in the lives of others and provided me with a solid theoretical ground to pen “Transition of a Butterfly,” my second book.
Within the last year, I created a mental health/empowerment curriculum for middle and high school girls. I believe in encouraging others to identify and break generational cycles, but I had to first apply it to my own life, which I have. I do not know what the future holds but I will continue to make strides in my life to empower others.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When building a legacy, it is never a smooth road. It will always be obstacles, but I prefer to call them growing pains. At times things may not go as planned, but you have to push past the frustration and find new solutions to grow your business. I’ve had situations where I created a product but it did not sell, and I did not understand why.
I had to learn that a product may be great but just making a product is not the only component to selling it. You have to advertise and market the product. Those are baby hiccups that you don’t foresee when starting a business.
When you come across a bump in the road, you slow down and contemplate on ways that you can either go around or over it, but turning around and going back is NEVER an option. The greatest thing that I have learned in business is being willing to learn, adjust and try new ways to succeed.
Girls Gossip and Women Network LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Girls Gossip and Women Network LLC, we are devoted to assisting individuals, couples, and families in becoming emotionally, mentally, and socially healthy and teaching them how to live a fulfilled and successful life.
We recognize the prevalent need and tackle it by seeking out those who are suffering and struggling with mental health concerns to gather research on the best ways for treatment. We review the research and then tailor our curriculum to make the treatment experience engaging for the best outcome possible for our clients.
The many talents that I possess sets me apart from others within the field because I am able to help others through my content by using different methods. Due to me being a psychotherapist, author, screenwriter and speaker, I am able to connect with people in different ways. I understand that everyone does not learn the same way. However, if you engage people with something they love, you then have a better percentage of getting through to them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment in my career thus far has been to do what I love while walking in my purpose. I believe my purpose in life is to provoke thought to change the behaviors of people. There is a saying that says “If you do what you love then you will never work a day in your life.” I am currently living that.
After a long day of purpose, I do not feel tired and overwhelmed. When I get into my car to drive home, there is an indescribable peace that I have. I believe when you serve the needs of others you become a blessing to them and in return, they become a blessing to you.
From a CEO’s perspective, I am most proud of having a company that is passionate about serving the needs of the people.
