Art & Life with Robin Cox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Cox.

Robin, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I studied art at UCLA and the Sorbonne in Paris, traveled extensively, and completed Bachelors Degrees in Fine Arts and Graphic Design. After exhibiting in galleries and having many art-related jobs, I realized that becoming a serious studio artist was not enough for me. I felt more at home teaching people of all ages not only about the mechanics and techniques of art but more importantly about the nature of creativity which I believe is inherent in every individual on the planet. So began my journey of teaching others how to unlock their own creativity and find their own creative voice by making art. After years of making mixed-media art and teaching with many varied materials, I saw clearly that creativity can be driven and inspired by unique materials – especially those that are repurposed or upcycled. This led me to start Remainders Creative Reuse – a nonprofit materials depot and maker space. There are so many materials “out there” and it is my hope to get them into the hands of artists, teachers, makers, and children, young and old. I am committed to demonstrating within the community that anyone who needs encouragement to pursue their creative endeavors can come to Remainders and be a part of a great and supportive creative community. Consequently, I find that my own creativity flourishes when I help others find theirs.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art is primarily mixed-media. I do collage, assemblage as well as printmaking and ceramics. I use as many repurposed materials as possible, so my process is very organic drawing internally from my own life experiences as a woman first, artist second, wife, mother, sister and friend. The takeaway from every art experience that I have is that creativity is inherent in every individual and I am the one who defines my own creative voice. All creative efforts have intrinsic value. My artwork is very personal, yet I strive to make it interactive and very easy to relate to by non-artists.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
No. I am not big on advice, except that one must be authentic and value their own creative voice.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My artwork is not a primary focus, although I am always creating. People can support my passion by supporting Remainders Creative Reuse in Pasadena. This is my great work – a work that everyone can participate in.
