Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailee McGee.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Laguna Beach, California. My first job was in sales selling my mother’s fine art oil paintings every summer at the Sawdust Art Festival starting when I was just eight-years-old until I was seventeen. Sales teaches you a lot about reading people, and I became fascinated with human beings. Storytelling was my escape, and movies were my choice medium. I moved to New York City to attend NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts screenwriting program, and then I began making my own short films.
After college, I balanced freelance production work with my own artwork in New York, Sydney, and Florida before moving to Los Angeles in 2013. Landing in LA, I continued to work freelance production jobs as a First Assistant Director and Producer on indie feature films, music videos, and commercials. Then I began writing, producing, and directing digital content for networks, brands, and entertainment marketing campaigns.
Now, I continue to make content for screens of all sizes and real life too.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not. Being a freelance creative has continual ups and downs: looking for work, being your own boss, scheduling your own time. Sometimes I struggle with focus and confidence, and I am constantly reworking my daily routines and habits — striving for more productivity, balance, and flow. Also, being a human being in the digital daze of today is tricky. I wrestle with device addiction and content overload, and I am working on how to be more present in real life all of the time.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am an artist, writer, and filmmaker known for blurring the line between fiction, reality, life, and art. I am proud to create work that pushes the boundaries of the medium in which it lives in and connects authentically with viewers by subverting something that was initially perhaps unexpected.
What were you like growing up?
I have always been curious, upbeat, and outgoing. Interest wise, I was and am passionate about storytelling and people.
Dance has always been a great way for to me express myself physically, and I took ballet classes throughout my childhood and teen years. I loved true crime and journalism; I was the Editor in Chief of my high school newspaper.
I loved participating in school drama productions as an actor, writer, or stagehand. I felt like a bit of an outsider from my hometown peers — I looked like most everyone else, but I never felt like I completely fit in.
