Meet Trailblazer Alex Keller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Keller.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ahh, my story… where to begin! I studied broadcast journalism at Temple University in Philadelphia. Spring semester of my senior year, I was accepted into the Temple Los Angeles program and in doing so, I had to transfer into Temple’s film school for the semester. This is when my world of journalism first collided with the entertainment industry. While enrolled in the LA program, I interned for a talent management and production company (formerly Principato Young Entertainment) and upon graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in May 2014 they offered me a full-time position with the company. That was my ticket to stay in Los Angeles. From there, I went on to work at United Talent Agency and then moved into television production, working as a talent coordinator on live CBS show ‘The Talk.’

Through these positions, I was learning a lot about the business side of the industry but I knew that I needed to fulfill my creative passions and more so, that I wanted to OWN something. I left my fulltime job at ‘The Talk’ August of 2017 so that I could focus on creating my own content. The first step was teaming up with Andre, my former co-worker, to launch our entertainment YouTube channel, Masters of the Movieverse. After seeing the success of our YouTube channel, that gave me the confidence to launch my passion project, Wanderdreams.com, a mindful travel, and lifestyle blog. As a travel enthusiast and pop culture junkie, it was only natural to hone in on these two subjects. Working on these brands has brought me so much joy and I am actually able to put my on-camera hosting skills and content creation expertise to use. Currently, I still have to work odd jobs to pay the bills, but I firmly believe that the groundwork I am laying now is setting me up for a future of financial freedom in a career that I love.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wish I could say it has been a smooth road but I don’t think that is the case of any entrepreneur. There are many times I want to jump back into the comfort of a full-time job but there is a little voice inside the back of my head that says keep building. I’ve bartended, worked as a brand ambassador, and served in restaurants. I remember one week when I was really tight on money and was offered a gig at Nesquick pop-up. I wore a bright yellow apron and poured chocolate milk for a bunch of tourists in Santa Monica for eight days straight. I’m not going to lie, I definitely questioned my life’s direction at the point, but I reminded myself this is the path I chose and it’s a privilege to hustle for my dreams. If you don’t have a trust fund or a “small million dollar loan”, these are the kind of sacrifices you’ll most likely have to make when going into business for yourself.

To any young women out there that have an idea – start now!!! For years, I was too scared to create my own content or put myself out there online because I thought I wasn’t good enough or that people would judge me. Eventually, I learned that nothing was going to just magically happen for me unless I did it myself. I let go of the fear and the excuses and I just went for it. You have to be the biggest believer in your talent and product before you can make others believe in you.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
As an individual, I am an on-camera host and digital content creator with expertise in travel and entertainment. These are the two main pillars of my work that have contributed to launching my blog, co-founding my YouTube channel, hosting red carpets, and obtaining creative freelance work. I think it is safe to say that I am most known for my Wanderdreams Instagram account since I have my largest following on that platform.

I take pride in the content that I put out into the world but I am most proud of the engaged communities I have built around my brands. For Masters of the Movieverse, my partner Andre and I wanted to provide a multicultural space for people nerd out about movies. Our audience has grown to be a family and I am amazed on a daily basis by the thought-provoking comments and conversations that take place around our videos. As for Wanderdreams, my idea behind it was to inspire people to simply get out and explore while leaving a positive footprint. Now, I absolutely love that people regularly reach out for travel tips, help planning their trips and I’ve become the go-to person on SoCal adventures.

I want people to not only see Wanderdreams and Masters of the Movieverse as brands I am building, but also as portfolios of my creative talent. As a one-woman-band, I can shoot, edit, write, produce and host. These skills coupled with my knack for connecting with people from all walks of life really help set me apart.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
This is a big question to tackle. Is it bad if I say that fragile male egos are one of the biggest barriers to female leadership today? Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of great men in the entertainment industry. For example, my YouTube partner Andre. He’s a guy and he rocks. However, there have been so many instances where I have attended networking events, gone on informational meetings, or even job interviews where a man in power tried to turn it into a date or come at me an inappropriate manner to which I politely declined. Then, after their ego is bruised, BOOM, said opportunity vanishes. I think the ‘Me Too’ movement is weeding out a lot of the bad apples and whipping the industry into shape overall, so I do see hope for the future but there is still a lot of work to be done.

I also don’t want to leave the impression that ‘woe is us’ and the future of female leadership is all dependent on male behavior. We must take responsibility and lead the charge. Women should be helping women. Whether you are at the top of the chain or the bottom, I think we all have something to offer. I am proud to say that almost all of my job opportunities have come from lateral networking with female peers. It is so important to help others, whether it’s something as simple as clicking a subscribe button or forwarding a resume, there are lots to ways to support our fellow boss babes.
