Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Cameron.
Brett, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started playing music in middle school after my mom convinced me to try out for the school’s national anthem. From there, I learned the guitar, piano, production, and songwriting.
Much of what I do now is a product of experimentation. Whether producing, songwriting, or playing live, I’ve seen what works for me and what falls flat. It’s constantly a game of artistic/self-exploration and refining.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an artist, it’s important to evolve, and so in the moments when the career feels to be at a standstill, that can coincide with creative block. Much of creativity emanates from inspiration, so when a gig doesn’t go the way you wanted it to or doors of the gatekeepers for blogs, curators, venues, etc. seem to be closed, that can influence your songwriting.
In that sense, those struggles will come and go many times within the same year. It’s just about riding the wave when something good comes into play and knowing that the valleys don’t last forever as well. Finding that middle ground is the best remedy.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a singer/songwriter/producer mostly based in the greater NYC area. I really try to bring a level of vulnerability/honesty into an anthemic soundscape. This juxtaposition of personal lyrics meets large atmospheric production is best designed for the live setting, for there are few things more exciting than connecting with a room full of people in a euphoric and personal way.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been drawn to being in the center of some sort of community. When I was a kid, I was a pitcher in baseball. Being an integral part of a team was a way for me to feel a sense of purpose. As I grew up, I started to do theatre, which gave me the same rush.
Overall, I was a nice, if sometimes intense, kid — always pretty academically focussed, curious, ambitious. What started as a desire to become a professional baseball player has certainly evolved over the years, but that wild — if sometimes oversized — ambition is still a part of me.
