Life and Work with Joelina Drews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joelina Drews.

Joelina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Already as a little girl, my biggest wish was to be a singer and perform on the biggest stages of this world. I grew up in a small and conservative village in North Rhine-Westphalia and have always been different from other children in my hometown. Whenever my schoolmates were going out or playing video games, I was listening to music, taking vocal and piano lessons and I wrote songs. Inspired by artists such as Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Alicia Keys, I fell in love with American pop music culture and urban R&B music and started to develop my own unique artist identity and style.

I started to play piano and write songs at the early age of six. With dad, being one of Germany’s most successful artists, it wasn’t always easy to find my own path, without being judged by other people. I have always been obsessed with American culture and fell in love with urban music and their direct and honest lyrics. In Germany, we don’t have that kind of music. It doesn’t have that urban edginess combined with rhythmic beats. So it came that I started searching for a producer in the US who was willing to work with me. When I was only 14 years old, I went to Los Angeles for the first time and recorded my first songs. As a result, I released my very first single in 2011 which was placed in the top 20 of the American Club & Dance-Charts. There followed TV-productions such as “Goodbye Deutschland! Die Auswanderer”, guest appearances at “The Dome,” “Verstehen Sie Spaß” and the RTL-Dance show “Stepping Out.” After this first little success, I kept traveling back and forth between Los Angeles, Sweden, UK, and Germany in order to keep on working on my music. Writing my own songs, I wanna be a voice to young woman’s issues like love, heartbreak, and rebound. In last November, I released “Skybar,” which is an urban pop / R&B song, followed by two other singles, called “Drive” and “Scream my Name” and I am already working on my next tracks that I will release soon.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Never. I actually manage everything I do by myself as I am an independent artist and this is not always easy and a lot of work! I do not have a huge team around me that helps me to manage and organize my work, so I am not only the creator of my brand but also the boss of my business and have to handle the business side – which is not really common in this area. But I do learn a lot and really grow through this, and when something good is happening, I am even more proud of myself. So I can only recommend doing as much as you can by yourself! Believe in yourself and never give up!

Please tell us about Joelina Drews.
I would describe my music as urban-pop music with R&B influences. I would say I have my own special sound and also topics I talk about, especially those ones that no other people really dare to talk about.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Work hard, be bold and do not compare yourself too much with other people. Do your thing and what you love in your own tempo, and it will pay off one day!
