Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Sou.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started when I decided to intern for three years and build experience while taking 23 units as a business student at a University. I’d wake up at 5 AM, get ready by 6 AM and be prepared for the call from the Key Stylist by 7 AM to tell me where I’d be at every day. I’d be on set as much as I could until I had to drive back to attend night classes and do it all over again the next day. I was a wardrobe stylist mostly in Editorial.
First, for Vanity Fair, Nylon and then Vogue. I said all of that to say I found out I wanted to Creative Direct after leaving Toronto to style for Jay Z for Times Magazine in New York while I was working on a multi-media series in Toronto with the most inspiring people ’til this day. I knew there was more than I needed to tap into because I was restless. I thought corporate would give me some structure in my career. But, I found out that’s not exactly what I needed.
After working for Nike for two years what I needed was the creative freedom to execute the million and one ideas I grew up in my head and couldn’t execute there. So, one day I had a random heart to heart with Kelly Rowland when she walked in one day, and we talked about my spirit and how restless I was. She said God, isn’t letting you sleep at night because he has a bigger plan. A week later, took that leap of faith to leave Nike and never looked back.
Now, I’m in the process of making my dreams a reality…. don’t get me wrong, I’m nowhere near where I want to be at yet. But, I’m grateful for all of the opportunities that came my way to lead me to the rooms I’m in, tables I can sit at and friends that I have now. It may take me longer, but I’m doing it my way on God’s timing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hell nah… it’s probably one of the most confusing, difficult and foggy roads I’ve ever took in my life. The challenges that I normally have to face is being a woman in a room full of men, being the youngest or having to prove to people I can I execute the way I envision things.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Focuses on incorporating the right tonality, texture, and emotion. Inspired by love and music. My purpose is to be able to tell stories and others creatively, aiming to impact and inspire lives using different forms of mediums. My work expands from content creation, installation/activation, launches, campaigns, large-scale events, and music videos.
I have eight years of artistic direction, experiential marketing, strategizing and brand identity for global artists and lifestyle brands. I am most proud of the experiences and lessons I picked up from the people I’ve collaborated and worked with.
What sets me apart from others is that I’m multi-dimensional, culturally in tuned to identifying emerging trends and hungry as fuck.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It means I’ve acquired the things money can’t buy. Personally, it’s when I have a sound mind, clear heart and my spirit is at peace. It’s when I figure out my purpose in life can change another person’s life and that I can shift and contribute something to the world.
