Meet Dominique McQueen of Finwell Benefits

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique McQueen.

Dominique, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up on a small three by 1-mile island in The Bahamas called Harbour Island.

Tourism is the island’s dominant revenue generator, and I knew any career outside of that would require me to leave the island. At age 15, I won a scholarship to attend St. Andrew’s School in Nassau, a pivotal step in shaping my career. My parents were my biggest supporters, as they knew I was driven and determined to forge a career for myself in business/finance.

I excelled in high school, and from there was awarded a scholarship to attend Beloit College, in Wisconsin, where I double majored in Economics and Management, and International Relations. There were many firsts in Wisconsin for me, including experiencing all four seasons and battling any weather conditions under 70 degrees, which unfortunately led to bronchitis every winter.

I graduated from Beloit College summa cum laude, then decided to pursue an MBA at Rollins College, a small liberal arts school in Winter Park, Florida. There, my passion for finance and entrepreneurship grew, and my career track was solidified. I worked hard in my MBA program, concentrating in both Finance and Management, which led me to receive the Wall Street Journal Award, graduating top of my MBA class.

Upon completing my MBA, I commenced my career in finance, with my first job at an international bank. I’ve worked in numerous finance roles since then (obtained the Chartered Financial Analyst designation), but my passion to help people led me to become a Certified Financial Planner.

I currently work as the Director of Financial Planning at Finwell Benefits. Finwell Benefits was founded on the idea that everyone should have access to financial planning regardless of income or net worth, and that the best route to provide access to planning is through workplace benefits. My work with Finwell was highlighted in Financial Advisor Magazine, and I was named a Young Advisor To Watch for 2018.

I also serve as a Board Member for Financial Planning Association’s Los Angeles chapter. Through Finwell and the FPA, I enjoy giving back to the community by organizing and participating in financial planning workshops.

In my spare time, I spearhead my organic hair care line project called Forte-Tress (translated into Strong Hair). I started this hair care line for women of color who are looking for natural, premier ingredients for their natural, voluminous tresses.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing worth fighting for is easy! The journey of getting to where I am today has been everything but smooth. However, one of my most endearing qualities is perseverance!

Long nights and early mornings were a staple along this journey, in addition to disappointments and heartbreaks (the unexpected loss of my father). However, I will never stop pursuing my destiny.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Very adventurous and risk-taking, clearly a tiger doesn’t change its stripes because it’s exactly the way I am now. Once a target was locked and loaded (goal, project, ambition, etc.), there was no relenting.

I loved anything involving the beach, nature, and reading. My mind was like a sponge – it sucked up anything and everything, and helped me dream the biggest dreams imaginable, for a girl from a small island.
