Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Brophy.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a surfer that was looking for a way to travel and surf. I discovered, at a young age, that I could paint surfboards to fund my travels. That led into painting commissions and illustrations and a full-time gig as an artist.
My art is inspired by nature, surfing and how the universe works.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is inspired by nature, surfing and how the universe works. When I’m in the ocean, I can feel the heartbeat of the planet, the wind, the waves, and the heat of the sun, and that makes me feel connected to the Universe. This feeling is what I strive to communicate through my art.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Now is a great time to be an artist. We have so many tools available to us. You can reach more people now than ever before, and you can do it on your own, without the gatekeepers of the past.
What can you do to encourage artists to thrive? Value their work. If you love it, buy it, so they can keep creating more work.
How or where can people see your work?
Most of my paintings are commissioned, and some are available at http://store.drewbrophy.com.
I also have a gallery called Brophy Art Gallery that I co-own with my wife Maria Brophy, in San Clemente, CA.
And, I’ve just released a book of my art and story; it’s like a 30 year retrospective in a book. You can see that here: https://store.drewbrophy.com/pre-order-painting-surfboards-and-chasing-waves-a-scrapbook-retrospective-by-drew-brophy/
