Life and Work with Traci Barrett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Barrett.

Traci, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career began in Phoenix, Arizona. There, I briefly lived in an artist community. That is where I fell in love with art, the process of making things and community.

Soon thereafter, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue hair and makeup in ‘the business.’ As I grew, I realized how important the artistry aspect, of what I was doing, was. I was surrounded by so many talented artists and was also continuing to discover my own voice. I found myself wanting to talk about art and the journey constantly. I was so interested in the process. That is how Tartare the podcast was born.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been so many obstacles in my career. And I’m not sure that ever ends. I think if you aren’t scared and overcoming hurdles, you probably aren’t growing much.

I love being scared. I love pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I thrive in that space.

I think that if you are a creative person, looking for their place, push yourself. Also, don’t worry about what everyone else is doing too much. Try and stay in your lane. Too much attention to others work can be really stifling and tends to make your own work inauthentic.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tartare – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Throughout my life, I have been a painter, designer, makeup artist, and hair stylist.

I am currently focused on editorial hair. I am known for pushing the boundaries of hair and merging the world of art and fashion.

My current passion is to create a platform with Tartare. I want it to be a space where artists empower one another to create and thrive while being able to monetize their work.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Oprah’s Supersoul and Masterclass podcasts have really changed my life.

Must reads are:

The Alchemist
The Four Agreements
The Power of Now
Andy Warhol A – B

Too many books to list.

I constantly still go to the magazine stand. I collect magazines, which might be a little hoarder-ish. I remember as a teenager flipping through the pages of Nylon, Interview, and Vogue and just being stunned. It really moved me. I felt connected to it. I’m sure that’s how kids feel now with social media and blogs. But I still relate to print. Which is probably why I chose to be an editorial hairstylist.
