Today we’d like to introduce you to Devin Davis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Devin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been writing music on and off for about twelve years now, but only four years ago got the courage to move to Los Angeles (from Orange County *eye roll*) and start a band. Ramonda Hammer is my first real musical project and I’ve put everything I have into it. When I got to LA, I just started immediately finding musicians, booking shows, and recording songs, even if it wasn’t perfect at first. I continue to read a lot of articles, talk to a lot of people at shows or music-related events, and collaborate with other musicians when I have the time. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, learned a lot about the ever-changing music industry, and will continue to do all that I can to make music a career for myself, my bandmates, and my friends’ bands. Staying positive and using resources through depression and creative blocks really help as well. And lastly and probably most importantly, having people believe in Ramonda Hammer and our music totally makes this project what it is. Whether that’s the label, producers, engineers, publicists, etc. that we work with or all of the super supportive fans and friends who come out to the shows. I try to stay very grateful for all of that.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has certainly not been the smoothest road. As I mentioned, I’ve made many mistakes with paying too much for certain things or booking the wrong shows or investing time with the wrong people. But I am grateful for all of that. Sometimes, it’s necessary to make those mistakes to grow and find what’s right for you. Everyone’s path is different. Some advice I would give would be to always ask the right questions. And know that if you do make a mistake, it’s okay and doesn’t define your entire music career. I also can’t stress enough how important it is to just be your most authentic self, especially as a woman in this industry. I STILL struggle with this sometimes, it feels like I have to remind myself of every day to be myself no matter what.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ramonda Hammer – what should we know?
We, here at Ramonda Hammer are proud to be total weirdos who play loud, emotional music. We are probably not cool but we don’t care. We are all kind of nerdy and sad and funny and just wanna emote all of that on stage. We definitely have a very unique sound and live show, considering that we all come from different backgrounds and musical influences. The best compliment (in my opinion) that we often receive after shows is that we look like we all really care about the music and each other when we’re interacting on stage. I love hearing that.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Well, I was always pretty organized and maybe a little bossy as a kid (haha, just ask my sister). I was into puzzles, math, drawing, and singing. I think all of that helped shape my current situation.
