Art & Life with Kadeem Nichols

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kadeem Nichols.

Kadeem, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Well I am a singer-songwriter, producer, musician, and all-around creator. I am originally from Queens, New York but recently moved to Los Angeles after I got married to my wife who is an amazing dancer. Growing up in a West Indian home, my parents played a lot of (what is considered old and classic) R&B, Funk, Country, Gospel, Blue grass, and Classical. This music opened up my palette to a plethora of different genres, sounds, and styles. They supported my musical endeavors at a very young age by buying me my first drum set and Keyboard (causing chaos in the house lol). I honestly hold them responsible for introducing me to music because they must have seen something in me. At 12, I remember stealing this 4-disc CD from my dad’s collection called “The Wonders of Stevie” by Stevie Wonder, and it changed my life. I ran those discs ragged, 24/7, consistently listening to them, studying Stevie’s vocal placement, arrangements, and lyrical precision. Safe to say I became obsessed with music, which led me to pursuing music.

When I was 14, I was struck by a speeding van traveling over 80 miles per hour while crossing the street. By God’s grace alone, I had no broken bones, fractures, brain damage or pain. That time in the hospital changed my life forever. God made it clear that He has given me a gift and a purpose, and that He spared my life so that I may live out that purpose. In that moment, I knew that my purpose was to pursue music and to live each moment like it was my last.

Since then, I have written and recorded music, played in bands, sung behind some amazing artist and even built a studio in my family’s garage. I went to college to study music and graduated in 2012 with a bachelors in Music Business and a concentration in Jazz & Commercial Arts. I have released two projects that are currently available on iTunes entitled “The Unusual” & “The Valley”. I’m currently out here in LA, networking and furthering my career.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a singer, songwriter, producer, musician and all-around creator. I like to make Music, PERIOD. I embrace musical fluidity where a person should be able to embrace all styles, genres, and experiment. I mostly find myself creating soul, R&B, and pop records but I truly open myself up to everything.

I desire to inspire people with my music. I speak on topics that we as human beings face with and I usually tell stories that are relatable and easily digestible. I like to use metaphors but I like to simplify so that everyone can understand. My hopes are for people to embrace not only the music, but the philosophies that I tend to share from Love, God and everyday life. I have designed all the artwork for every project that I put out. Again, I like to create and step outside the box when it comes to artwork and graphics. That is the very impression before people hear the music so It needs to be clean and unique.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The biggest challenge that artist face is being unique and them self. Trends have an unusual effect on people that make them think that they have to follow them in order to be successful. I’ve found that all trends stem from an original idea that caught on. if we would focus on self and not following the status quo I think it would make a difference for Artist.

Another major challenge would be fear. Fear of Failure, Fear of trying something new, fear. If we as artist would let go of fear, many of us would be very successful and happy.
