Meet Adrien Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrien Edwards.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My mother worked for the Orange County Register as a graphic journalist. At the time, the Register was split between using computer graphics and studio artwork to accommodate columns in the paper. My mom introduced art-making materials and processes she used during her time at the register to me at a very young age. From then on, I became interested in color and visual communication through art making.

Please tell us about your art.
I am interested in creating abstract paintings. My paintings are loosely inspired by the figurative painting. I aim to create work that can operate on a visceral, abstract immediacy. I often incorporate some neutral tones or use medium-sized canvases to maintain a connection to a viewer’s relationship and their own body. My paint application remains fairly rudimentary to maintain a transparency of how my work arrives incompletion.

My compositions often express the opposite of my disposition. If it is balanced and harmonious, it probably means I was feeling conflicted about something. If the work looks agitated, it probably means I felt at peace with a part of me that often is not.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Embrace being alone. I often feel alone during my time making art. When you are making progress on your honest expression, your worries kind of fall away. When I feel alone, I try to remind myself that being alone can be a luxury that you might not have for long. A party of one is not cost effective in our society. Even though it might raise feelings of being discontented, it’s a luxury.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can view some of my recent work on my Instagram account. I post images of my work along with flyers for future art shows. I am also a part of FA4 Collective artist group. My work is featured on the fa4collective Instagram account as well as shows that we throw.
