Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Kortez.
Michael is an American multidisciplinary Artist known for infusing Cubism, Pop Art, Surrealism and Traditional Tattooing styles into his own unique beast. Born in 1980 and hailing from Los Angeles, Michael grew up in the center of the Lowbrow & Punk Rock movements. Michael has been exhibiting since he was a child in 1988 at galleries throughout California, New York, Texas and Mexico, to name a few. He can currently be found pushing the boundaries of his work at Tattoo Mania in West Hollywood, California.
Please tell us about your art.
I’m a Mixed Media Artist who works on Paper, Canvas and Skin. I create because I feel a burning need to do so, I was born to do what I do. The inspiration comes from some otherworldly place, I’m just lucky enough to be aware that it’s there! The divine light chooses me as a channel and I produce under its guidance and spell.
As far as what I’d like people to take from it? Well everyone has their own journey, their own path and set of eyes and this creates a beautiful array of ways to look at Art. It’s all perception it represents whatever the individual viewer sees within it.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
It’s a great time to be an Artist! There are so many avenues that are open for an Artist to take, From online connections to local galleries. It’s not an elitist beast anymore anyone can be successful doing what they were born to do. You just gotta put in the time, be open and present. Work with devotion and with no concern for material gain… the rest will follow.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen at La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Hollywood for their yearly juried group show and there are many recent pieces hanging all the time at Tattoo Mania West Hollywood. You can also see it in person if you’d like via a private (appointment only) tour of the studio. Instagram or Google is also an easy way to see the work instantly through the internet. You can support the work by showing your friends and family, Talking about it to others and spreading the word. Purchasing an original work of Art, of course, is the best way to go when supporting the Arts. If you need more info you can email me.
