Today we’d like to introduce you to Linh Nguyen.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Linh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my career as a cosmetologist in January 2015 with Carlton Hair in West Covina. I assisted a master stylist for 9 months while attending their academy once a week. After I finished my program, I was promoted to a stylist and had the opportunity to take clients and build a clientele. While I was going through my assisting program, I felt like my skills lack when it comes to men haircutting. So, I went back to school to get my barbering license and decided I wanted to expand, so I took a job at a barbershop in Irvine.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a smooth road as a cosmetologist because I did an assisting program that provided me with the education I need to feel confident. As for a female barber, that is a different story. I feel like as a female barber, there is a lot of doubt from clients not trusting you with their hair just because of your a female. They feel like you can’t “fade” as well. My advice for young women starting out is to make sure you assist somewhere before going straight to the floor as a stylist.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into J Anthony & Dankcuts story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in blonding services and haircuts. I am most proud of how far I have grown in the last two in a half years. I feel like what set me apart is that I never rush any of my services and always allocate more than enough time just to ensure that the client leaves 100% happy. What set me apart from others is that although I have only been doing hair for a little over 2.5 years, I have taken numerous amount of classes that you could probably think of.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I believe a good book to read is “Think and Grow Rich ” by Napoleon Hill, “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter. I also enjoy listening to Gary Vaynerchuk, he helps to understand different approaches you can take to market your business.
