Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeasy Monroy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About seven years ago, I was a program director for Social Vocational Services, a program that helps adults with disabilities. I took some time off when my daughter was born and decided to take up cake decorating as a hobby. I took a couple of classes at Michael’s and instantly fell in love (I like to consider myself an artistic person). Shortly after, I started making cakes for family and friends, usually free of charge or for a small fee.
After a year or so, word started to spread about my work (I put in countless hours perfecting my craft) and I started an online-only bakery. I took all my orders through social media and started to make a bit of money. Fast forward to the end of 2018, where I connected with a business partner and decided to open up an actual bakery in the Torrance area.
Owning my own shop has been a dream of mine for the last seven years, and getting to this place, as a mother of three, has been difficult but rewarding. Our bakery plans to focus on the health market by providing sugar-free, low calorie, healthier treats.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success is never smooth. I am a mother of three young children, and self-doubt, time management, and so many other issues have stood in my way over this journey. I held a full-time job until recently and would take orders on the side, and many nights would stay up until 4 am making cakes, then wake up at 6 am to take care of my kids.
Balancing my marriage, family, social life, job and budding career has been nothing sort of a juggling act.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sugar Free Shack – what should we know?
Our business is called the Sugar Free Shack and we focus on sugar free and health-conscious treats. We specialize in custom cakes that are just as much pieces of art as they are desserts. The way people eat food is starting to change as society has become more aware of the dangers of sugars and unhealthy foods. Our mission is to create great tasting desserts that are healthier than traditional sugar options.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have two business partners. Judd Matsunaga, an attorney and realtor in the South Bay area, who came up with the idea of starting a sugar-free bakery after noticing the lack of healthy options in most bakeries.
My husband George Monroy is also a business partner, who oversaw the entire process of looking for a space to lease, to coordinating construction and marketing the business.
