Today we’d like to introduce you to Maritte Go.
Maritte, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida, as a second-generation Filipino American in a strict Catholic household. While my culture emphasized traditional careers in medicine, I was drawn to the arts from an early age, performing professionally in television and theater before earning my BFA in Acting from Florida State University.
Interestingly, my fascination with the supernatural began through my Catholic upbringing. My mother would take us to sites of reported Marian apparitions, where people claimed to witness miraculous healings and unexplained phenomena. Those experiences planted the seeds of a lifelong curiosity about the unseen.
After moving to California, I became disillusioned by the limited opportunities for actors of color and decided to pursue filmmaking at USC, where I discovered my passion for writing and directing horror and drama. It was also where I met Cristina, who became a dear friend and creative collaborator. We bonded over our shared fascination with spirituality, the paranormal, and life’s greatest mysteries.
I went on to direct several horror and true-crime films, but privately, I became consumed by stories of near-death experiences, past-life regressions, and the possibility of an afterlife. What I discovered challenged everything I had been taught about religion, yet somehow felt deeply true and liberating.
In 2020, I dreamed of starting a podcast exploring these subjects but held back, afraid of disappointing my Catholic family. Six years later, Cristina approached me with the very same idea. Without hesitation, I said yes.
And that’s how The Curious Soul was born—a journey that feels less like a career pivot and more like coming home to a part of myself I’d kept hidden for years.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been far from easy, but I believe our greatest struggles can often lead us to our deepest purpose.
I grew up in a physically and emotionally abusive household. My father carried the wounds of his own traumatic childhood, and my mother endured her suffering through the Catholic belief that bearing her cross would bring her closer to heaven. As a natural rebel, I often challenged that environment, which made my childhood especially difficult.
The trauma led me into deep depression, anxiety, and moments when I no longer wanted to live. I struggled to reconcile the idea of an all-loving God with a world filled with so much suffering. Those questions eventually led me beyond the religion I was raised with and toward spirituality. Books like Conversations with God and The Power of Now profoundly changed my perspective and began a journey of healing and self-discovery.
Through that healing, I realized that my pain could become my purpose. I wanted to tell stories that gave other women who had experienced abuse a sense of hope and the possibility of healing. That calling inspired films like Gaslit by My Husband, which reached #1 on Netflix, and A Rose for Her Grave.
It’s also what led me to create The Curious Soul Podcast with Cristina—a space to explore life’s deepest mysteries while offering hope, connection, and inspiration to others.
Looking back, I wouldn’t wish those experiences on anyone, but they shaped who I am. What once made me question the meaning of life ultimately helped me discover my own.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a filmmaker, writer, and director with a passion for telling stories that explore the complexities of the human experience. My work has largely focused on psychological thrillers, horror, and true crime, but at the heart of everything I create is a fascination with human nature—our fears, our resilience, and our capacity for transformation.
I’ve been fortunate to direct and produce films like Black as Night for Blumhouse and Amazon, which received three NAACP Image Award nominations, A Rose for Her Grave, and Gaslit by My Husband, which reached #1 on Netflix. While I’m incredibly grateful for these milestones, what I’m most proud of is the opportunity to tell stories that give a voice to people who have suffered, particularly women, and remind them that their circumstances don’t have to define their future.
What sets me apart is that I approach storytelling from a deeply personal and spiritual perspective. I’m fascinated not only by what people do, but why we are here, what shapes our experiences, and what lies beyond what we can see. I believe even our darkest experiences can hold the potential for profound growth and healing.
That curiosity has led me to a new chapter as co-creator and co-host of The Curious Soul, where Cristina and I explore consciousness, near-death experiences, spirituality, and the mysteries of existence through conversations with extraordinary people.
Ultimately, whether I’m directing a film or hosting a podcast, my purpose remains the same: to tell stories that challenge perspectives, spark curiosity, and help people feel a little less alone. I want my work to do more than entertain. I want it to leave people with something meaningful—a question, a new perspective, or perhaps a little more hope.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. I believe in hard work, perseverance, and the power of believing in yourself enough to take action.
My last name is Go, and anyone who knows me well will tell you that it couldn’t be more fitting. I’m constantly going—dreaming, creating, pursuing, and working toward the next goal. I’ve never believed that someone will simply hand you your dreams. You have to believe they’re possible and then take the necessary steps to make them a reality. Believe and take action. Those two things have been the foundation of everything I’ve accomplished.
I also believe there are very few shortcuts to meaningful success. And when you take them, you often miss the lessons, wisdom, and experience necessary to sustain what you’ve achieved. The struggles, setbacks, and years of hard work aren’t obstacles to success—they’re what prepare you for it.
Of course, opportunities and timing can play a role, but I believe preparation and persistence are what allow us to recognize those opportunities and make the most of them.
I’ve learned that the journey is just as important as the destination. Every challenge has taught me something invaluable, and every dream I’ve pursued has required me to grow into the person capable of achieving it.
So perhaps what some people call luck, I call the intersection of belief, preparation, and relentless action. I don’t wait for doors to open. I do everything I can to create them.
