Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Schlanger.
Hi Jacob, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I came to LA in 2017 to finish school and pursue film and music. Wound up working for Hitway Recordings (where Trippie Redd got his start), met just about every artist that performed at the Bay rolling loud. Personal studio session with peep, fauni, 69 tried pulling up etc. Assisted them in throwing half a dozen shows featuring everyone from Famous Dex (at his height), to Xavier Wolf, and even Sosa. From there I worked for Migos managerial side during their culture 2 release. Worked with them through Coachella then became the project manager and personal assistant of Claude VonStroke/Barclay Crenshaw and managed their campout festival for a year. Work recently brought me down to Atlanta where I work with Jan Smith (very notable vocal coach) and continue to freelance as a creative director between being a Death-Doula and Biofeedback technician. I’ve lived a lot of lives. Certainly a books worth. Grew up with Jordan Carter and Summer Walker for other random things.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Consistently bumpy. You have to wear down those roads until the path is smooth. You keep doing until you’re at your best. Those 10k hours are you sanding down the hills along your path.
Women
Drugs
Cost of living
Self belief
9-4 vs full artist
All of it
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m known for being the “Therapy of Rap” when I was out performing steadily in LA. I make incredibly vulnerable songs using modern language to phrase my perspective in way that’s understood but drastically different. I believe the goal of any artist is to create their own language and world. I have that and more. See balladboyslange.com as an example of all the creative feats I put into a project. I don’t think I’m better than anyone else. What sets me apart is my self love, desire to heal others, the want to be imperfect, to share the ugly side of emotions, and to create a community of homies who are healing. My music is weird and different, unfiltered, and unbending, but its found a small group of people that I couldn’t be more thankful for. Other big music videos: Ouroborus by Slange and Let It Burn. I write, direct, Storyboard, design, produce all of my projects and 3d animations
What makes you happy?
The exigence of life —- because that’s how we make use of our feelings, emotions, and experiences of life. Isn’t cool to have existed?
