Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel De La Peña.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and from a young age, I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. Growing up, I was a musician and played drums in a band. But outside of performing, I found myself designing T-shirts for the band and selling them at our shows. Looking back, I think that was my first real taste of entrepreneurship, and I loved it.
In my early twenties, I started my own digital marketing company, and that’s where I really began to understand what it meant to run a business. I learned some valuable lessons, both good and bad. Being in charge of my own schedule was great, but not having the discipline to structure that freedom taught me a lot. I also learned some tough lessons about the importance of contracts and protecting yourself in business. Those experiences helped shape the way I operate today.
My mom always told me, “Find two things you love and combine them and build a business out of it.” That advice stuck with me. I’ve always loved sales, connecting with people, and beautiful homes. To me, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of calling somewhere new “home.” It’s a fresh start, a clean slate, and a place where you’ll make memories for years to come. I wanted to build a career around giving people that feeling.
When I entered real estate, I quickly learned that sometimes the best opportunities come from simply being yourself. On my third day as an agent at Keller Williams, we participated in RED Day, a community volunteer event where we were serving food to veterans at the VA. I spent the day talking with the veterans, laughing, and joking around. When I asked if anyone wanted more food or water, a couple of them joked, “A shot wouldn’t hurt.” I saw my grandfather in them. He was a Navy veteran, and their sense of humor and banter reminded me so much of him. Being there just felt natural. It didn’t feel like work.
Toward the end of the event, one of the gentlemen approached me, thanked me for spending time with them, and mentioned he was thinking about selling his house. He asked if I could help him, and I simply said, “I’d be honored.”
Three days into my real estate career, I had my first listing. With the help of Katrina Bragg, I received 14 offers in roughly two weeks and sold his home well above asking price. Some might call it beginner’s luck, but I’ve always believed that genuine relationships create opportunities. I wasn’t there looking for business. I was simply enjoying myself, connecting with people, and doing something meaningful. I remember thinking that I was exactly where I needed to be, and I’ve never looked back.
Eventually, I met Melissa Zee at Keller Williams Beverly Hills. She invited me to lunch, and as I got to know her, I saw her incredible work ethic, determination, and ability to negotiate so naturally. Not to mention, she could practically write contracts in her sleep! I remember thinking, “That’s exactly the kind of agent I want to become.” After my first daughter was born, I joined the Melissa Zee Group, and today we’re proud to be part of Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California. I’m incredibly grateful to work alongside Melissa and be part of an organization that allows us to continue growing and challenging ourselves.
Real estate is an incredibly rewarding career, but it’s certainly not easy money. We’re researchers, advisors, analysts, managers, mediators, marketers, punching bags, sometimes therapists, jokesters, and serious business professionals. Every day brings something different, and that’s what makes it all so rewarding.
Today, I’m fortunate to be building a career doing something I genuinely love, but my greatest motivation is my family. I’ve always been driven, but becoming a father gave that drive a completely different purpose. Maddy and Alana are my why. Everything I do, from the early mornings and long nights to the countless miles I drive across Los Angeles, is for them and my wife, Linda.
I want my daughters to grow up knowing they can build whatever life they dream of. Whether they choose to follow in our footsteps or create something entirely their own, I want them to have the confidence and opportunities to do it.
I used to work hard because I wanted to build something successful. Now, I’m working to build something that lasts beyond me.
My mom gave me a childhood filled with incredible memories, and I want to give my girls that same experience. I want them to have a beautiful place to call home, feel supported in everything they pursue, and someday look back on their childhood with the same happiness I feel when I think about mine. At the end of the day, that’s what home means to me, and it’s exactly what I want to help my clients find.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think any entrepreneurial journey is a completely smooth road, and mine certainly hasn’t been. One of the hardest things about building something yourself is learning to hear the word “no.” Doors are going to close on you, people are going to reject you, and sometimes you’ll put countless hours into something that doesn’t produce a result. If you’re afraid of rejection, real estate is probably not the industry for you.
You have to wake up every morning treating it like a fresh start. There will be days when you make dozens of calls and nobody wants to talk to you. There will be times when you work for weeks or even months without getting paid. You have to be willing to get hung up on, hear “no” repeatedly, and still approach the next opportunity with the same enthusiasm as the first.
When I was younger, one of my biggest challenges was learning who to trust. Building businesses taught me that not everyone will have your best interests at heart. Sometimes people will take advantage of your time, talents, or willingness to help, regardless of the value you bring to them. Those experiences taught me the importance of setting boundaries, protecting my work, and understanding that relationships have to go both ways.
But I’ve also learned that for every person who might take advantage of your kindness, there’s someone who will genuinely appreciate it. Some of the most rewarding parts of my career have come from building lasting relationships with clients and colleagues, celebrating victories together, and watching those relationships turn into friendships. Those are the experiences that make the difficult days worth it.
When I do have a terrible day, my favorite way to reset is coming home to my family. There’s nothing quite like walking through the front door and hearing my daughter yell “Dada!” as she comes running toward me. Whatever happened that day suddenly doesn’t seem so important.
Of course, I’d love to say I can completely forget about work when I get home, but that’s not exactly how real estate works. Opportunities don’t always arrive between 9 and 5. Sometimes the phone rings during dinner, sometimes at midnight, and being a dedicated agent means understanding that your clients may need you outside of traditional business hours.
At the end of the day, I’ve learned not to take rejection personally. There’s that old saying, “When one door closes, another opens,” and I think that couldn’t be more true in real estate. The reality is that we reject opportunities and people every day ourselves. It’s a part of life, and it’s certainly a part of business.
I’ve learned that you can’t control every outcome, but you can control how you respond to it. You have to be willing to learn from the difficult experiences, appreciate the good people you meet along the way, and wake up the next morning ready to do it all over again.
We’ve been impressed with Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a luxury real estate agent with Christie’s International Real Estate Southern California, working alongside Melissa Zee as part of the Melissa Zee Group. Together, we represent buyers and sellers throughout Los Angeles, bringing a personalized approach to every transaction.
One of the things that initially drew me to working with Melissa was the incredible network of relationships she’s spent more than 20 years building and maintaining. That kind of experience and trust doesn’t happen overnight. Through our team’s relationships and the broader Christie’s network, we’re able to connect with local and international clients, explore off-market opportunities, and collaborate with an exceptional network of agents and trusted vendors.
We pride ourselves on providing a 24/7 concierge-style service. Real estate doesn’t always operate on a convenient schedule, and we understand how important it is for our clients to have someone they can depend on throughout the process.
But what I value most about our approach is honesty. We’re not afraid to have difficult conversations or tell our clients something they might not necessarily want to hear. Our advice is backed by research, market knowledge, and experience, and it always comes from a place of wanting what’s best for the people we’re representing.
At the end of the day, our clients are trusting us with some of the most important financial and personal decisions they’ll make. We take that responsibility seriously, and I believe that kind of transparency, accessibility, and genuine commitment is what makes our service valuable.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are several people in my life who deserve recognition, and I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and influence.
My wife, Linda, deserves more credit than I could ever give her. She’s been by my side through the ups and downs, supporting my ambitions while building businesses of her own and being an incredible mother to our two daughters. I am genuinely so proud of the woman she is. We’ve been together since college, and looking at where we started compared to where we are today is honestly mind-blowing. Being her husband has only made me more motivated to become the best version of myself.
My mom has been my greatest inspiration for as long as I can remember. She’s overcome adversity through relentless determination and hard work, and she’s shown me that anything is possible when you’re willing to work for it. Nothing about where we are today was handed to us. We’ve earned it, and I’m incredibly proud of that. There is no one who has inspired me more consistently throughout my life than my mom, and I don’t think that will ever change.
Melissa Zee believed in me from the very beginning. She never made me feel like I had anything to prove, and she’s always been genuinely invested in seeing me succeed. It’s rare to find a mentor or colleague who cares just as much about the success of others as they do their own. She’s a great example of that, and I’ve learned a tremendous amount from working alongside her.
I’d also like to give a special thanks to Katrina Bragg, who helped me navigate my very first real estate transaction. Her calm confidence and cool demeanor are qualities I’ve always admired, and I believe they’re a big part of what makes her so successful.
I’m incredibly thankful to have such strong, accomplished women in both my personal and professional life. They’re genuine role models for my daughters, and I’m proud to have the opportunity to learn from and work alongside them.
My dad has also been a tremendous source of support. Whether I’m sharing a success or working through a difficult situation, he always finds a way to help me see things from a different perspective and move forward with my head held high. I’m grateful to have him in my life and to be able to share so many moments with him and my daughters. He’s an incredible grandfather, and my girls are lucky to have him.
Looking back, I think one of the most important things I’ve learned is that success isn’t always about where you end up, but about the people you meet, the relationships you build, and the person you become along the way. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with some incredible people, both personally and professionally, and those relationships have played a tremendous role in where I am today.
Whether I’m negotiating multimillion-dollar properties, building relationships with clients, or simply spending time at home with my wife and daughters, I try to approach everything with the same values: integrity, confidence, and a genuine appreciation for the people around me. I’ve always believed that how you treat people matters just as much as what you accomplish.
I’m proud of the businesses I’ve built, the relationships I’ve developed, and the career I’m continuing to grow. But what excites me most is knowing that there’s still so much ahead. My ambitions have only gotten bigger and so has my appreciation for the life I’m building with my family.
At the end of the day, I want to be remembered not just for what I’ve accomplished, but for the way I made people feel along the way. Whether that’s helping a family find their next home, earning the trust of a client, or setting an example for my daughters, that’s the kind of success that means the most to me.
