Life & Work with Sasha Kendall of Other

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sasha Kendall.

Sasha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started dancing as soon as I could walk – there was nothing else I would have rather been doing. Once graduating school I went on to train and study full-time in performing arts before beginning to freelance as an artist. I worked on gigs, music videos, creative direction and in film & TV in Australia before my first contract in the Cabaret world. During that contract I performed as a solo artist with dance and aerial solos as well as group numbers. Once I had a taste of working in the Cabaret scene I couldn’t get enough. I wrapped my first contract in Australia before moving overseas to London to pursue my dreams of being a performer. I have since worked through another four contracts in London, Dubai and on cruise ships as a guest entertainer performing in dream jobs and shows. I moved to London to further my career and to perform on stages around the world – I am incredibly grateful for every opportunity that comes my way, but I do give my self credit in saying that I am an incredibly hard worker and love what I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in this industry is smooth sailing – I have had challenges left, right and centre but the way to overcome them is with tenacity and drive. You experience a thousand no’s constantly with auditioning and submitting for contracts but when you get that yes, everything is worth it. Rejection is redirection, and everything that is meant for you will find you. I commend myself for not giving up and throwing in the towel, my dreams and career goals have always been the thing to pull me out of a slump. I am surrounded by some of the most incredibly talented and brilliant friends, we are always there to help each other out when life gets tough and they have been my rock when going through moments of struggle. Support systems are so important, especially when living a life of following your dreams and working in industries so close to your heart. I adore my closest people, and I wouldn’t be who I am without them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a performer you wear many hats – but I am a dancer through and through. Nothing compares to the feeling of being on stage and being able to share stories, entertain and allow an audience to lose themselves in another world. What I love so much about working in cabaret shows is being able to break that fourth wall and interact with the audience. Every show is different as every audience is different. There is a lot of space to improvise, think on your feet and work with the reaction of the crowd – this is also why I love live performance. Over the years I have felt myself grow as a performer, become much more comfortable with audiences and be able to use my presence on stage to connect with those watching. I believe our job as performers is to let the audience forget about the outside world and become completely immersed within the world we are performing from – when you can allow people to experience that, you are doing your job to the best of your ability.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The feeling of success is something I have struggled with over the years. It is easy to get caught up in constantly trying to achieve the next goal, the next dream job, the next career tick that sometimes we can forget we are living the life we used to dream of. As much as it is important to set your eyes of goals and dreams, it can be easy to lose sight of how much has already been achieved. Sometimes I get so caught up on wanting to be at a certain point in my career, or booking a certain show that I forget how far I have come and what I have already achieved. Yes, success to me is being on the booked and blessed side of the industry but it is also about being a good human, being happy, being surrounded by loved ones and so much more outside of just having a career. The days I feel most successful are the days I laugh, smile and feel effortless. I have so much more I am wanting to achieve as a performer and I absolutely believe I will get there – but enjoying the journey on the way is just as important as booking the jobs.
