Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivek Varma.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Vivek Varma Nampally, and my journey started with a deep passion for cinema and the art of visual storytelling. I pursued my Bachelor’s in Film and Media, specializing in Cinematography, at Annapurna Film School in Hyderabad. Later, I moved to Los Angeles to continue my education at UCLA, where I further developed my understanding of filmmaking, visual language, and the technical and creative aspects of cinematography.
Moving to the US was a big step for me. It exposed me to different filmmaking cultures, perspectives, and ways of approaching stories. It helped me grow not just as a cinematographer, but also as a filmmaker who understands the importance of storytelling beyond just beautiful images.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on independent films, music videos, and feature film projects as a cinematographer. Every project taught me something new about the craft, collaboration, and the realities of working in the film industry.
But I always wanted to do more than just work behind the camera. I wanted to tell stories that I genuinely believe in and create films from the ground up. That ambition led me toward producing as well as cinematography. I started developing my own projects, working with writers and artists, building teams, and learning the business side of filmmaking.
Like any independent filmmaker, my journey hasn’t been straightforward. There have been financial challenges, projects that didn’t move forward as planned, and moments when things felt uncertain. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that loving cinema is one thing, but having the patience and resilience to keep pursuing it when things don’t work out is another.
Today, I’m building my own production company, 1804 Dream Pictures, in Hyderabad. My goal is to create meaningful, visually compelling stories rooted in our culture and experiences, while maintaining a cinematic language that can connect with audiences everywhere.
I still consider myself a work in progress. I have a lot to learn, many stories to tell, and a long way to go. But everything I’ve experienced so far, both the opportunities and the setbacks, has shaped the filmmaker I am today. For me, this journey has never been just about making films; it’s about building something of my own and creating stories that leave a lasting impression.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m the first person in my family to step into the film industry, so I didn’t have anyone in my family to guide me through this journey or show me how the industry works. I had to figure out most things on my own, learn from my experiences, and find my own way forward.
My journey actually started with photography. I was fascinated by the way a single frame could capture an emotion, tell a story, or make someone feel something. That interest gradually grew into a passion for cinematography and filmmaking. What started with photography eventually became something I wanted to build my entire career around.
Coming from a background where nobody had experience in this field came with its own challenges. There was a lot to learn, from developing my skills and finding opportunities to understanding the industry and building connections. Moving to the US for my education was another big step, and later, starting my own projects and stepping into production brought a completely different set of challenges.
There have been times when projects didn’t work out, finances became difficult, and things didn’t go according to plan. As an independent filmmaker, you often invest so much of yourself into a project, and when things fall apart, it can be emotionally and financially challenging.
But I think those experiences have taught me resilience. I’ve learned that talent and passion are important, but patience, consistency, and the ability to start again after setbacks are equally important.
I’m still on my journey, and I know there’s a long way to go. But looking back, I’m proud that I chose to pursue something I truly love, even without a roadmap. I didn’t come into this industry with a legacy to follow; I’m trying to build my own path, one frame and one story at a time.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m Vivek Varma Nampally, a cinematographer and film producer passionate about visual storytelling. My journey began with photography, which taught me to observe light, composition, emotions, and the stories hidden in everyday life. Over time, that passion evolved into cinematography and eventually into producing my own projects.
I specialize in creating cinematic visuals that serve the story rather than simply making a frame look beautiful. I’m particularly drawn to naturalistic storytelling, emotionally driven narratives, and films that feel authentic and relatable. I believe the camera should make the audience feel something, not just show them something.
My experience spans independent films, music videos, and feature film projects. Having studied filmmaking in Hyderabad and Los Angeles, I’ve had the opportunity to explore different approaches to cinema and develop my own visual perspective. Alongside cinematography, I’ve also ventured into film production because I want to be involved in the entire creative process, from developing an idea to bringing it to the screen.
What I’m most proud of is taking the initiative to build my own path in an industry where I didn’t have a family background or an established network to rely on. I started with photography, learned through experience, pursued my education, and gradually worked toward creating opportunities for myself. Today, I’m building my production company, 1804 Dream Pictures, with the vision of producing meaningful stories that connect with audiences.
I think what sets me apart is that I approach filmmaking from both an artistic and a practical perspective. As a cinematographer, I care deeply about the visual language of a film. As a producer, I understand that bringing a creative vision to life also requires planning, teamwork, problem-solving, and persistence.
I’m still growing, experimenting, and discovering my voice as a filmmaker. Ultimately, I want my work to be recognized not just for its visuals, but for the emotions it evokes and the stories it tells. For me, the greatest achievement would be creating films that stay with people long after they leave the theatre.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
When I think about my childhood, one of the things I cherish the most is growing up in a big joint family. There was always someone around, conversations happening, people laughing, celebrations, and so many little moments that felt ordinary back then but mean a lot when I look back today. Growing up around so many people taught me the value of relationships, family, and having people to share life’s ups and downs with.
I was always someone who liked observing people and the little things around me. I think that curiosity was a part of me even before I realized I wanted to become a filmmaker. I loved the feeling of discovering something new, imagining possibilities, and dreaming about what life could look like beyond what I already knew.
Looking back, I don’t think I can pick just one particular day as my favorite memory. It’s more about that feeling of being surrounded by family, having fewer worries, and believing that anything was possible. Life becomes more complicated as we grow up, take risks, and chase our dreams, so those childhood memories remind me of a simpler, happier time.
I think a part of me still carries that same curiosity and the desire to experience life fully. And if there’s one thing I’d love to hold on to from my childhood, it’s the ability to dream big without being afraid of how difficult the journey might be.
